Cuts fast, smooth, and perfectly. The key to using this cutter is practice, patience and the right speed on your drill. The cutter can be used on a variety of materials, and although wood isn't listed, I actually used it to cut some holes to run some 1.5" conduit through. The cutter is heavy and very sharp and with a warranty for the normal lifetime of the product, it is a great choice!

This is a nice hole cutter. Great for projects where you either need a starter hole for a jig saw or saws all. Or maybe you just need to drill a hole in your project, like bird houses, entertainment cabinets, ect. It's well made of thick solid metal and should last you for many projects. The starter bit helps get the cutting established quicker and more accurately for a uniform shape. I also like that this bit can cut through metal. A great choice for a variety of cutting projects.

Very keen as delivered. I've cut 11 gauge and 1/4-inch carbon steel plates. Very little wear.
Cutter centers quickly on 1/8-1/4 inch stepped pilot.
Pilot is replaceable; even the 1/8-inch hex key is supplied in the handy protective case.
The case is transparent (making tool identification quick) and rectangular for compact storage amidst other cutters.
Spare pilot drill #31874 is available at H.D., where pick up price is lowest among 26 internet sources.
Strong tapered (beehive) spring ejects the slug effectively. And a new spring comes with each pilot.
I am anxious to learn how long the carbides last.
Cutting depth is 1/2 inch; wholly adequate for most sheet metal work. Drilling square tubes and laminated work requires some hole matching and centering layout. But the extra steps are worth it for the convenience of cutting such with portable / hand held equipment.
Quality of construction is first rate Klein. Nicely machined. Appears to be fine grade steel. Of ten teeth, fusion welding is 75% visually flawless. Minor porosity appears along the I.D.
Half-inch hex shank chucks securely.
This is a tool one can take pride in.
I'm convinced I should buy the set. Klein # 31873 (also best price at H.D.)

These were purchased as replacements for the original pilot bit, shoud it be damaged or worn. The replacement bits have not been used yet, but appear to be the same as the original part supplied with the hole cutter.

My brother, the electrician always uses Klein tools. Looking at this thing, it looks like a hole saw on steroids. It has the tapered pilot bit and 12 carbide teeth. Probably more saw than I need for household use but I do a lot of my own work and often use hole saws. This has a return spring to keep the material from jamming inside the cutter. With hole saws, it's important to go slow and not try to force it. I put a deadbolt on my garage's service door and this cut through the steel door like butter. I occasionally do work on electric panels myself and prefer hole saws to knockouts because they are more versatile and I'll use them in other applications. There's a reason Klein tools has a reputation for quality.
