Customer Reviews for Olympic Elite 8-oz. EST910 Mushroom Semi-Transparent Exterior Stain and Sealant in One Low VOC

Top rated 2024 semitransparent by Consumer Reports (May/June issue). Not close to a top-rated deck stain overall. However, the highest rated ones are all SOLID stains which I can't stand. I want to see wood grain, not look painted. Limited tint selection at the store. Color wasn't really represented adequately and was darker/redder than I originally wanted but this turned out better. Used on a 15x15 deck top, railings, posts, face joists and lattice. Lattice required time and care for runs. All were prepped by foam deck cleaner coverage and then pressure-washed. Deck is second story and sits over a concrete patio with AC unit. Covered underneath with a tarp before stain application. Definite must. Stirred all 3 gallons thoroughly per instructions and occasionally throughout use. Had no transition issues between cans. Applied 2 coats as recommended using a 2" nylon sash brush. There was definite evening out of color and protection with the second coat. Coverage was spot on the maker's claim. First coat required 1 2/3 gallons. Second coat took approx. 1 1/4. gallons. Ended with less than a pint. Just enough for any touch-ups down the road from furniture scrapes, etc. Product was applied in varying conditions. First coat went on in low humidity mid-80's. Second coat applied in up to mid 90's and high humidity. Instructions suggest staying at 90 or below. At the highest temperature the product began showing signs of less absorption from drying too quickly. At one point a raised tarp was set up for shade to block direct sun and lower temperature. Brush required cleaning several times daily. Using the recommended warm water with soap (I used Dawn) were wholly effective and thorough with excellent result. Had a rainstorm part way through first coat. The deck portion that had been coated 4 hours or more per directions was left alone. Rest was covered with another tarp. Until I could get it protected, a small newly coated area was briefly exposed for 1-2 minutes. No adverse effect. The instructions to maintain a wet coating edge were followed to the extent possible. 3-4 deck boards were fully done together in one pass. However, that concept is ridiculous if not impossible when doing complex railing. Had no problems blending wet with drier areas regardless. Entire process took 8 days. Picture provided is 10 days after completion and a heavy overnight rain. I'd add more pics including the "before", but it seems only 1 image is permitted. Total cost including water, gas for power wash, cleaner, sealer and brush - about $200. Yeah, definite 5 stars on this material.

Jury is still out. It rained 3 -4 hours after application and it seemed to stay on the wood.

$50 stain, 2 gallons, one gallon with large dent, all oackaging intact. Im sorry but for that orice i expect product to come intact. This is on home depot not manufacturer. Ive used this stain before, works well

Perfect color for our privacy fence. It was our 4th try with different colors. All the others were too dark for our taste. But this color was perfect.

Stain goes on easy and so far after one month our deck railings look great. Because our wood is old, we filled holes and cracks with white wood filler. Those spots show through the stain even after two coats. I’d suggest testing a filler, if you use one, to see if it takes up this stain or use /make a filler that matches this color. The color of the stain seems redder than the online sample. It leans more towards a terra cotta color…a bit darker than my clay pots. Appreciated the low voc while applying. Fingers crossed for how it weathers/ages-that’s why giving it 4 stars instead of 5

From the color presented for American Chestnut, the actual stain is quite a bit darker!

We used a sprayer to apply the semi-transparent Walnut Olympic Elite to spruce, pine, fir pressure treated panels. We used roughly two cans per side, one coat, and spread evenly with a brush. The wood absorbed it without peeling or flaking and the grain of the wood is still very visible.

Not as transparent as I thought it would be. Can still see the grain but at a distance it appears painted. Goes on easy and covers in two coats.

Good color. Does have some sealant in it, but not enough to weather the sun in Colorado. We have to restain our deck every 2 years.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My granddaughter's playset is 3 years old and constructed of treated lumber. It came as a kit, so selecting individual lengths of lumber was not possible. I have found that treated lumber is not always the best quality and after 3 years of Mid-Atlantic weathering, it was due for a quality stain or paint product. I chose Olympic Elite because I did not want to do this job again in the near future. I pressure washed the set and allowed it to thoroughly dry. This took some time, because scattered showered appeared often. Once dry, I used an orbital sander to knock down the raised grain, splinters and imperfections. I hosed the dust and again waited for the wood to dry. We brushed the stain on and it covered nicely. We had sufficient stain left over in the gallon can to apply a second coat. It probably was not required, but I would rather stain than have to pressure wash, sand and prep again in a couple of years. That evening, we had a downpour. I went out to check the stain the next morning and it looked great. This is a quality product. Nice application, great look, and the DNA of an excellent company. I highly recommend Olympic Elite.

It was just what we were looking for! And the nice girl A tall redhead - sorry forgot her name- was the one that introduced us to it! She was helpful and pleasant and much better than the older gentleman who kinda took over from her? Great color true brown not red orange or yellow under tint Probably would have never found that shade without her help:)

It prevents cracking. Works so well. Easy to use. Made my picnic table look new. Dries quickly. I am very happy with this!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I haven’t used this stain on my swim platform yet, but I did sample it. I love this stuff. It’s a stain and sealant, it has a lifetime guarantee, all season protection, waterproof (perfect for my boat), it prevents peeling and chipping and provides a mildew resistant finish. The color is a beautiful driftwood gray that has gray, brown and blue hues. It will look amazing on the swim platform on my boat. Will update with finished results.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My deck needed to be restrained and I chose Olympic Olympic® ELITE Advanced Stain + Sealant in One Semi-Solid in Black Walnut, As with any project please understand the prep work involved as this will affect the outcome. I did all the necessary prep to my deck before attempting to stain. Also, do a spot test on the wood to see if you like the color. Also, read about the product before staining. I personally like to apply stain with a 4” brush then go over with a course roller. I applied 1 coat, let it dry. Applied a second coat as I preferred it to be darker. My personal opinion is using a sprayer wastes product and you still have to work the product in. Even in 93 degree weather I had no trouble with the material drying too quickly or not giving me an opportunity to go over areas that needed it to be sure the finish was applied evenly. Applying this was so easy. Great experience, nice finish, easy clean-up. I do prefer a solid stain as it lasts longer. It rained the next day and it was beading up on the deck. The stain made my deck look terrific and updated. I would definitely buy Olympic Stain again. I usually wait until the paints/stains are on sale before I purchase it. I would but the amount needed upfront as stains/paints can differ from can to can.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice semi solid stain, perfect for our older deck that needs refinishing. With the semi solid you can still appreciate the natural wood grain, but it seals more thoroughly and masks imperfections. We did a test spot on our deck in bad need of TLC. Goes on smoothly and looks darker in the bucket than on the wood itself.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This stain was easy to apply. It went on smoothly with a brush and covered the wood. Two coats will create a nice surface. I used it on raw wood. A little soap and water and the brush cleaned up quickly. It lived up to its name.

It also dried fast. I only had to use one coat. I really love the chestnut color. It is a light brown. Almost brown/tan. It made my stain project simple and quick.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It’s very easy to apply and was also a very fast cleanup. I love the color - as it’s darker than I thought it might end up. I was hoping it wouldn’t be too light. So, it’s a very good product. You would want to use the deck staining tool and save help back because that way it glides on nicely. It can be a bit pricey if covering a large area, but I highly recommend.

It gave me some time to do a whole section before I started wiping the access away. It's a really nice color. I have had the product I stained outside in the rain and it still looks amazing. The water actually beads up on the product which is nice. Very simple to use and I would definitely buy this in the future.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Did a partial deck replacement do to rotten wood. After replacing the boards we pressure washed the deck let it dry and stained if using the Olympic elite. The deck now looks brand new. We couldn’t be happier.

The color looks exactly as expected, and it went on smooth, and even in the application process with no concerns or problems from my end. In addition, it dried quickly and provided a very luxurious rich stain and finish to the final product. 1 gallon provided great coverage. The black walnut semi solid color looks wonderful and I really like the fact the sealant was already in the paint. Not having to seal, the final product was a significant timesaver. Overall, I highly recommend this paint for ease of application wonderful lush finish and not having to seal the final product.
