The ORBIT B-HYVE SMART HOSE FAUCET IRRIGATION CONTROLLER/WI-FI HUB is one handy item. I can't count the times I have watered in the back yard and gone to work, then sat there at work worrying that I forgot to turn it off and the hose ruptured, wasted hundreds of gallons of water! Now I can check the B-HYVE from my phone and be sure that it is shut off. One less thing to worry about!

Got this to supplement my in ground sprinkler system to water the flower beds in front of the house with a soaker hose. I also have an Orbit sprinkler controller with multiple zones for the lawn, but they don't water near the house. Includes the hose valve/timer, a Wi-Fi hub with a 110VAC wall plug/dock. Set-up is painless for this valve; however you need to be in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range with it to set it up. The MAC address of the hub and sprinkler are printed on them. Write them in the manual for future reference. The iPhone application has been very stable for the +2 years and provides necessary prompts and notifications. You will need to download and install it first if you don't have it installed. It needs your ZIP code to get the local forecast. The application on my phone works great. I set up days / times and duration. Since this is Wi-Fi enabled, it checks NOAA weather service, and 'modifies' its operation based on my ZIP code forecast. It is a bit overly optimistic about rain. If rain is in the forecast it will skip watering, but you can easily override that delay.

Very sophisticated smart watering system. This level of smarts built into the smart mode of this system is impressive, and way more than the normal level of stuff being passed off as ‘smart’. This kit consists of two parts, a wifi hub and a single faucet valve. The hub is a small USB device powered device and a power supply that plugs into a 120V outlet and should be within range of your wifi and close to the location of the valve which connected to your outdoor faucet. For some reason I had quite a battle getting it paired to my Nexus 6P Android phone. The pairing process uses BlueTooth and the B-Hyve app kept crashing BlueTooth. It was also slow. One needs to pair the b-Hyve hub and the valve itself, presumably to the hub. The initial attempt to pair the hub failed. I had to kill the B-hyve app (version 1.7.57) a number of times as it hung during the pairing, software update and “updating details’ phases. When it attempts to connect, there is no way of cancelling the operation. I had to perform a factory reset on the valve a couple of times too, but each time I managed to get one step further to getting it all set up and the firmware updated. Once setup, everything seems to be working very well. You can make configuration changes via BlueTooth or Wifi. One can set a watering program manually or one can set up smart watering which takes all sorts of parameters into consideration. You can select the type of plants, the soil type, the type of sprinkler as well as any local watering restrictions, and it decides when and for how long to do the watering. It takes the weather forecast and evaporation rates, etc. into account too. Looking into the advanced area one can see numerous parameters that selecting the soil, and plants etc. are setting, and one can tweak them there too. Unfortunately the selection of plant types did not include moss, nor did the sprinkler selection allow me to select a mister, which is what I use to keep a large mossy area damp. I know not many people encourage moss, but I would have thought that misters are somewhat more common. Selecting a drip irrigation type did not generate a smart watering regimen I was expecting, but I was able to set infiltration rates in the advanced settings to produce longer misting times. The valve also measures the gallons used and one can also calibrate the GPM rate Connecting the system to Google Assistant worked flawlessly and I can use voice commands to switch the watering on or off. Switching the valve on in the Google Home app, also worked but once on, Home did not provide a way of switching it off again. That could be a bug in Home. A voice command worked fine though. Since it is still below freezing most nights here in Maine, after some dry run testing, I have unplugged it until later in the spring. I received an email alert the next day informing me that the system had been offline for 24 hours! One can turn the water on and off manually at any time with a 5 second button press at the valve. Additional valves can be added to the system allowing for an extensive and sophisticated irrigation system that is very impressive. Overall, I hope they get the pairing on Android sorted out and more stable, as that is the only issue preventing this from getting 5 stars. At least that is something that can be fixed over time. It appears that Orbit has a JSON API to the system - this is important for integrating the watering system with the rest of a smart home. For example, we expect visitors between 2PM and 5PM, so don’t run the front lawn sprinkler then. The problem is, Orbit has not published the API, so technical users are having to try to work out how it works. This is also a very important aspect when considering a long term investment in the hardware as it means that we would be able to continue using the system even if Orbit and the app goes away one day. Orbit, please publish, the API for the system, lots of people want to make it work for you! Even better, embed the JSON service in the hub itself, so that the internet and an Orbit server are not needed. It appears that the wifi hub is Espressif based, this would make it perfectly capable of hosting an JSON interface directly.

I have a tendency to turn on a sprinkler and then forget to turn it off. My hope with this electronic WIFI valve that will be thing of the past. As soon as I got the set I signed up on the B-Hyve web site and downloaded the app for my phone. The biggest problem with this system is the app. It is pretty hard to figure out the first time you use it. That is my reason for giving the system a four star rating. Once you figure out how to set everything the timers are easy. One thing that is not addressed in the app is that you can only use WIFI or Bluetooth. After I had connected the hub to my network the app asked be to set up Bluetooth. However it would not connect and I kept getting an error message. Once I selected cancel for Bluetooth everything worked great. The WIFI hub seems to have better range than my home network and so far it has reached all the locations where I have tried the valve.

This product is simple to set up and program. Couldn't get any easier!! I purchased and installed the B-Hyve smart irrigation controller to auto-fill my newly installed water fountain feature. I live in Southern California and with the heat an all, I got tired of replacing burnt out fountain pumps where I used to live due to the water dissipating. Anyway, I installed this device in-line with my irrigation system with it's own dedicated valve that I had installed a while ago. I programmed both to run simultaneously and it works beautifully!!
