The point of using a terra cotta orchid pot is to allow enough air into the potting mix (from the slits in the side of the pot) so that the roots will have access to AIR and will not rot from being too wet. However, the number and extent of the slits and/or holes in the side of the pot has gradually shrunk over the years, to the point where they are almost not there at all. I have some older orchid pots with 6 large slits around the side. The current version of the pot now sold at most garden stores and Home Depot has 4 tiny holes, better than nothing, but not adequate for the task.
The only reason I use these orchid pots is because they are better than plastic for hanging on the pot clips I use, because of the sturdy lip of the pot, and because unglazed terra cotta allows the medium to dry out between waterings. For best culture of Cattleya and other orchids with similar requirements, a plastic mesh basket or mounting the plant on a stick (as it would be found in nature) will probably give better results.
But what I really want is a terra cotta orchid pot with more and larger slits. Hint, hint! This product can be improved!

I agree with the unglazed crowd. If you get glazed pots you may as well use plastic. I like to give the root ball some breathability - especially orchids and bromeliads that don't like to sit in water.

Perfect Pot!!
Clay pots are PERFECT for orchids, because unlike GLAZED pots the allow oxygen to reach the roots. There is also the much reduced chance of overwatering, the number one reason orchids die.

TERRA COTTA POTS
Do not buy TERRA COTTA pots(any size) that are not glazed on the inside. Water will be drawn into the clay and the soil will dry out quickly, esp if outside in warm/hot temps. Only glazed pots are good for your plants. The Home Depot (at least in Palm Springs) has several of these unglazed pots from Mexico and are priced low. I bought two large pots and have to water every other day. I will be replacing them (not from HOME DEPOT) with glazed before my plants are too established or dead. Spend the extra $$ for glazed pots; you and your plants will be happy you did. I cannot believe HOME DEPOTS buyer was unaware of this...or was he/she?
