No Quality control, fails after minimum use
Received with a bent axle on the front wheel, had to hammer it into normal position. Now a year later the self propelled operation fails to run.

Handle + self-propel broken Unusable after 2 years
Since I got the mower it has had issues. The self propel never turns off or matches pace, it’s just constantly moving forward. This makes the wheels dig furrows in the ground on turns. It also chews up the batteries pretty quickly (I’m now on battery 4). On top of that, one of the pegs that holds up the handle and allows it to fold broke within the first 6 months. I made do with one pin for a year now and that finally broke when I went to go mow today, so now it’s unusable since the handle only has one position now, on the ground. So sad that it’s such a pricey mower and has had numerous issues that have now made it unusable within just a couple of years…

Loving this new mower! Better than gas...
We are loving this new mower!! It is, hands down, the easiest to use mower I have owned. My teen often mows the lawn for us and he was quite happy to ditch our previous mower and use this one. Feature thoughts breakdown: - Self propelled - very smooth and easy to use. Two options for variable speed adjustments to suit your style. I walk slower than my son so I set the max speed lower and went full throttle. EXTRA...you can self propel without the blades running to walk it back to the garage! - Wheels/Traction - Wheels are right sized for easy pushing and they stay on line and don't wobble. Traction is nice for any slope you may deal with. - Ease of adjustment - Want to adjust height...one hand 2 seconds! Want to set handle height or fold it up...one hand 2 seconds! Trust me when I say it is easier than any mower or baby stroller you have struggled with in the past. - Power - Handles my Bermuda grass without any hesitation. Other mowers will bog down at times and make me cut slower. - Battery life - My yard is over half an acre and we had two bars left on the second battery. Very happy and have confidence that we won't be forced to take a charging break before it's done. - Compatibility - The best thing about this mower is that it uses the same batteries that are used in my other tools like the string trimmer and backpack blower. - Space saving - We couldn't fold and stand up our gas mower so it took up tons of room in the garage. You can see in my picture that this guy fits neatly in a convenient/unused location between doors. What more can I say?? It checks all of the boxes I have for a push mower. Did I leave anything out?

          Broken after 4 uses
I had high hopes for this product as it cut really well and was easy to use. The battery didn’t last quite as long as what was expected but it came with the two batteries and if I worked hard enough I could get through my lawn without having to charge the battery again to finish. The sound factor was great and the cut grass looked good. Unfortunately after 3 1/2 uses the front right wheel came off. There’s no way to reinstall since it’s a weld attachment and not a bolt attachment. So after only 4 mows my $500 law mower is unusable.

            Pleasantly Surprised
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this last night and put it to work today. My first electric mower... bought it for our rental place for the quiet battery operation between tenants and no hassles with noisy gas powered equipment (I’m listening to my neighbours right now) Pleasantly surprised with the smooth operation for the 1/2 acre lot and easy set up. The one thing I would mention is the tag on the key says rotate key 180 degrees to activate battery. Might want to say remove key and then rotate key 180, reinstall key. I was thinking car ignition for a moment :) Battery life was good, no issues. The bag is large so no need to empty continuously. There is some lag time with self propelled feature - didn’t use it much. All in all it was a good first day and I enjoyed using it. Oh, my neighbour even commented on the quiet operation. Super easy height adjustment as well.

              Started strong, finished weak
I had the lawnmower for six months. During that time it cut the grass very well. I was very impressed with the mulching and consistency of the cut. The construction, engineering, and manufacture of the lawn mower has left me unimpressed. Day one, the headlights came off. Within a couple of uses screws and bolts were dropping off in the course of cutting grass. I brought it into the repair shop within six months because the handle bar broke so that the power walk behind would not work. The mower could no longer fold the handle bar down to be compact storage.

This is close to wanting to keep it except for a couple shortcomings. First reading other reviews many would have been addressed had you called Ryobi CS which I did when it intermittently stopped with plenty of battery life. Handle had to be absolutely all the way up when you lock it and problem solved. This has a mulching feature. It does NOT mulch. It does not have a mulching blade and all the mulching block does is create a blob of grass weighing down the unit as it fills every bit of empty space in the blade compartment. Most important and the reason I am returning it is the claim it can mow up to a half an acre on one charge. It does not come close to a quarter acre heck not even 1/8 an acre before it is dead. My back yard is 80X50 with a porch and shed making about 3600 SQ FT. On a full charge it did about 3/4 and I shut off the self propel to get more cutting or it would have not done 2/3 of that 3600 SQ FT. With tax an extra battery would be $200.00, sorry too much. It cut nicely and was decent in handling and noise but it needs 7,5-8AMPS to cut just a front or back yard for an average postage stamp lot. Too bad, I really liked this mower but to have to keep a gas mower to finish the back yard does not work for me

I have many of Ryobi power tools and love them. So when my gas mover dead, I decided to get their lawn mover. Charged the battery and me and my son took it out to cut and trim the yard. What would have taken 30 minutes before turned into three hours. We have a small hill in the front yard and the mover would stop every time we tried to mow it. We live in south Florida so it's really not a hill by any means. Also any time we hit a good bump it would stop. So I'm taking it back and will talk with my neighbor across the street to see what brand they have because they have no problems with their mower

                  don’t buy
2016 i had bought a ryobi mower and loved it with the exception of the 5ah battery not being enough to mowe 1/2 an acre. Come June 2020, I purchased this mower for fathersday. One of the two locks for the self-propel was broken. When the handle system is folded one of the grooves was grinding the aluminium. After the second use the self propel became stuck on high. I attempted to call custumer support to get a replacement but never got someone on the phone. I took it back to home depot. I want to inform everyone that I purchased this mower online from homedepot for $379.00 NEW. DONT pay more than that for this mower

This lawn mower is slick and easy to use nice you have it up and running. Know that the handle has to be fully extended to run, but the fact that it’s electric and has self propel are awesome features. It requires little-to-no maintenance as a result, and it has multiple settings for length of blade. The battery also lasts long enough to get a good cut, and it charges easily. Overall there’s really nothing negative to say, it’s been great for me. Much better than any gas mower I’ve had.

When my gas-powered self-propelled, mulching mower succumbed to "ethanol poisoning" (small engines and ethanol do not get along well), I decided to check out rechargeable electrics, given there would be no need for gas cans, oil changes, etc. And the technology for these has vastly improved. For about the same price as a higher end self-propelled, mulching gas mower, I bought this one instead. Entirely pleased with this mower! Battery charge life of about 35 minutes is fine, given it takes me only about 15 to do my lawn. The lithium-ion battery recharges in 4 hours or less. While I had to get used to controlling the self-propel speed, I did get the technique. After 5 mowings, I've found this mower is quieter than a comparable gas mower and does at least as good a job in mowing and mulching.

Battery operated is the way to go
I received my Ryobi 21 inch 40 volt lawn mower a week ago. Assembly was easy - read and follow the instructions. Going from a gas operated to battery operated lawn mower will take a little time. The self-propelled feature is different, but can be mastered - need to ensure lever is in correct position. The lawn mower is quiet - you hear the blade wind blowing. I have the Ryobi 40 volt 4.0 amp battery as a backup. The mulching piece or grass catcher and starter key has to be in place to start and operate the mower. Overall i really like the mower. I have to change my ways becuase the battery-operated lawn mower is different. I highly recommend this mower.

Everything about the mower is great but my wife just pointed out that the handlebar is way too high for shorter people. It's perfect for those 6 feet tall but at just over 5 feet it is way too high for her and she feels a redesign should take place. For the record it has been lowered as far as it can go. Maybe Gene Simmons will loan her his boots for cutting the lawn.

The lawn mower is good but I don't think it's great and I'm on the fence about whether I could recommend. PROS: -single height adjustment lever - simply fabulous to use and so easy to adjust the cutting height -very nimble: The mower is just so easy to turn and maneuver. It turns so easily and with no effort whatsoever. It's almost as if the mower is weightless when you turn. Turning was something of a chore before but not w/this mower. CONS: -I'd say I can mow a lawn for about 20 to 25 minutes MAX before the battery is fully deleted. I live on about a 1/4 of a acre and I can only mow the front or back of the house. I could not get through both sides -Takes a LONG time to charge the battery. This is not the kind of battery that will charge in 45 minutes so that you can edge the lawn while charging the battery and then finish the other side. It takes hours (which is fine if you're charging overnight) but you can't charge in between jobs in the same day. You need two batteries to fully complete a 1/4 acre lot -I'm petite - about 5'2" - and I find the handle bar top, when fully extended (and it has to be to get the mower to start - it's not adjustable) hits the middle of my chest. So in terms of fit and comfort, this would be great for a taller person but for a more petite person having the handlebar hit you so high is not as comfortable. It's not terrible but not optimal for us vertically challenged individuals. -COMPLETE pain to store: As mentioned the handle take up a lot of horizontal real estate. It's about a 1/3rd longer than my other lawn mowers. If you have a garage and storage isn't an issue then it's fine but I store mine in the shed and these really long, thick handlebars make it difficult to store -Not so easy to fold handlebars: The photos showing the handlebars neatly tucked in w/the lawnmower being stowed vertically look great and this is all definitely possible. You don't need to be a rocket scientist but to fold up the handlebars is not so intuitive and seems more onerous than it has to be. You have to unfold two latches at the side, press another two clips, tuck in the top handlebar, then jiggle this lever at the front to release the safety latch, fold the way too long handlebars over the body.....it just feels over engineered and I find it a pain EVERY SINGLE TIME. If only it could be a bit more effortless like the the single height adjustment blade adjustment. Now that lever and the ease of moving through the height settings is a thing of beauty and intelligent design. OBSERVATIONS -Not quiet (but no louder than a gas mower): I keep reading reviews saying how quiet electric lawn mowers are. It's just a fraction less loud than my other gas lawn mower (I had a Toro Recycler). I was hoping to mow early in the morning or late in the evening but it won't be happening unless I hope to make enemies of my neighbors -Quick start: It starts very quickly. There's a 2 second pause when you first press the blade lever -I miss the function where the lawn mower blade stops but the lawn mower is still on so you can easily start mowing again: This is a little bit like the Dyson cordless vacuum (which I love). Once you stop pressing the lever, the mower comes to a dead stop. Now that seems fine in concept but sometimes you just want to pause the mower while tossing a twig or something in your way. Once the mower comes to a stop, you have to re-engage the mower, press that blade button and this all takes 5 seconds or so. It doesn't sound too bad and once again it isn't but when you factor in how many times you stop to pick up that miscellaneous item and then have to restart the mower, you'll see how inconvenient it is. The best example I can give is it would be equivalent to driving a car and your car's engine turning off EVERY time you stop at a traffic light. You would have to press a button to re-engage the motor/or turn the key and then move the gear back to drive and then press the accelerator. -Light is ok: I do like to mow at dusk but the light didn't much of a difference. I feel very far away from the front of the mowing path so perhaps that's why (once again due to the somewhat excessive length of the handle). -Grass catcher bag a bit too large to easily fit into the paper grass clipping bags: I do use those paper bags to deposit the clippings. The other lawn mower bags fit very easily and neatly inside. This bag has the almost exact same dimensions as the paper bag so you have to be REALLY careful when trying to deposit the clippings inside. I've never made such a mess of trying to get the clippings in the bag and most of it ends up outside the bag until you get the paper bag 1/3rd to 1/2 full. While I can see the benefits of a larger bag, shaving a few inches would be preferable. Also I would think the mower carrying the extra weight would deplete the battery even faster. -Cutting ability: I thought my gas lawn mower cut the lawn a bit cleaner. There were more stray pieces of grass (but not many). I think it's because I like to exercise while mowing the lawn so I walk at a very fast pace/almost a slow jog. My gas lawn mower had no issues but this one seemed to balk when I tried to move too quickly and I could see this in the results when I pushed the mower too quickly over a patch of grass. I don't think this will be an issue for many but if you like to move very quickly as well you'll feel the hesitation from the mower and deceleration of power. In summary, I am NEVER going back to a gas lawn mower but I don't think this is the right model for me. I was on the fence when I first began writing this review and now I think I for sure that this is not working for me. The battery just doesn't cut it for an avg, 1/3rd of an acre lawn, the lawnmower itself is erogonomically designed for a taller person w/no adjustability and there are a few annoying qualities I can't get past. Hope this review helps. I think Home Depot and Ryobi are both great companies. I have a lot of Ryobi's power tools including their cordless nailer and I really like them all and the price point is stellar but this one feels like a bit of a miss. Not terrible but just didn't deliver what I needed.

Very Powerful and Built Like a Tank This is my 3rd Ryobi Cordless mower. Comparing to my previous mowers, this one is an absolute keeper. I had my share of cordless mowers prior to settling for Ryobi mowers, such as EGO, Dewalt. Ryobi is very user friendly with an excellent build quality. At the beginning, the Smart-Trek feature was a little awkward for me and my wife. However, as you adapt your walking and navigating the mower, it becomes second nature you to easily mow without using too much push, just focus on area you are mowing. We both love it and calling dibs to mow the yard. :-) The metal deck and 21” blade size makes this mower very solid, comparing to other comparable mowers. This mower is a good-looking mower and a great conversation piece with neighbors as well. I already converted 2 of my neighbors to Ryobi mowers after letting them take mine for a test drive. I am hoping this mower will last many more years to come.

Mower is ready to use straight out of the box, Flip up handles, set desired cutting height, insert a battery, slip grass clippings bag on its frame and set in slots on mower...I’ve used my new 21in. 40v mower 5 times now since it was delivered LOVE IT! It’s so easy to use and so quiet compared to old gas mower, I have multiple Ryobi 40v yard tools, so while I charged 6.0 battery that came with mower I just popped in a 3.0 battery from Ryobi blower and yeah! It had enough power to mow all of my front lawn and about 1/2 of backyard lawn before needing to be charged. Now with 6.0 battery I can cut both lawns twice before needing to recharge. Really like how easy it is to fold and store mower, it only takes up about 1/3 of the space old gas mower did in garage AWESOME TOOL

Heavy duty and larger sized mower. My husband is already loving this mower and is ready for spring to come in Michigan. This mower arrives with very limited assembly involved. The key start is great and easy to use. It comes with a new type of charger and one that took about 24 hours to charge for the first time using. Our other RYOBI battery worked just fine and we were able to test out the mower right away. It is very easy to push as the self propelled option works great, but the mower can also be used without that feature. It is very easy to change the cutting height and very easy to maneuver. My husband ran it over the lawn to test and it was cutting just perfectly. Bagging the clippings or mulching the clippings are both options. This mower is of metal construction and very well built. This is not an all plastic model. The handle adjustment is also great, as my husband is 6'4". The whole design is upscale and it is great to be ready for spring.

Ryobi and The Home Depot now have the perfect 21 inch lawn mower for your yard. With it's ability to mulch or bag, it is good for all seasons ! The height adjustment is one hand operation ! The "Self-propelled" mode is controlled by, how fast you can walk, with the pressure on the control handle. It also rolls without self-propel to get at the tricky areas, like next to shrubs ! The 40 volt/6amp hour battery is good. The lights make it good for mowing at sundown !! I wish it had 2 batteries ! I highly recommend this mower !!

Ryobi 21" 40-Volt Brushless Lithium-Ion Cordless Smart Trek Self-Propelled Mower with 6AH Battery is awesome! The directions were good. It comes with a quick start guide to. The mower itself has directions/reminders inscribed on the mower. I put the battery on to charge around 1700. It was still charging at 2400, bedtime. The next am it was charged. After first use it only took 4 hours to recharge. It weighs less than a gas powered mower. Which, along with the smart trek makes it easier to maneuver around, and mow. Prior to use handles must be fully extended, and locked. The battery has to be in the left bay, looking down at mower. The handle seems high extended, and locked. But, once you push down to mow the handle lowers too. It is amazing how this mower adjust to each person mowing with no, to minimal effort. Initially my spouse tried it without the self-propelled. He did a couple of rows and it was slow going, and bogged down a few times. Once he turned on the self-propelled it ran smoothly. Again, it goes as fast, or slow as you go. Our yard is a mixture of grass, Fl weeds, and fine brush encroaching on the yard. It is around 12,000 sq. ft.. Right now it is sparse. It mowed all but a couple of rows in the backyard. We have a couple of 40-V, 2.6 AH batteries from our blower, and weed eater. We just threw one of those into the mower and got the job done. We feel if we had it in self-propelled the entire time we could have finished with the 6AH battery alone. The blade is sharp, and works good. The light is a nice bonus. I wish we could turn it off during the daylight hours. But, it will be great to have when caught outside at dusk mowing. Initially, I thought the wheels looked flimsy. But, they are made of the heavier duty plastic. And with the rear-wheel drive the wheels moved right along, no issues. It comes with a bag, and mulching plug. It works great with either one. Nice that a choice is provided. We will be ordering the side discharge accessory. The mower is brushless, and provides the power needed to get the lawn mowed easily. As with any new product there is a learning curve, especially with all the great features. But, once you read all the directions this mower is so easy to adjust, and use it is absolutely amazing!

The Ryobi 40 volt 21" smart tech self propelled mower is designed to deliver gas like power to match the user's walking speed while maintaining an optimal cutting speed. It has rear wheel drive, weights 79 pounds as similar to my Honda gas mower that I normally use to cut the same area that weights 84 pounds. The Ryobi includes a 40 volt 6 Ah battery and charger. The on board battery compartment has a place for a backup battery that could be purchased separately. The mower can mulch or bag or with an optional accessory, side discharge. The front wheels are 8" and the rear wheels are 10". The battery should be stored at about 30 percent and was shipped at that level. It took 6 hours to bring the battery to full capacity. The motor sound and the motor running only occurs when the blade is turning and that will not happen unless the handle is fully extended and locked, the bag or insert in place and the start button depressed. The handle is 45" from the ground and higher than other gas mowers and will not run if shortened. My neighbor at 6' 4" said it was OK for him but it may be too high for some others. When you push down on the handle it moves the mower forward but instead of it being a smooth drive it jumped forward then stopped. It was difficult to make it move at a smooth walking pace. The cutting speed for the most part remained the same but sometimes slightly fluctuated. I tested it on my 60X100 lot that just needed a trim. It has a few slopes but is mostly flat. The mower ran exactly 40 minutes and cut the area satisfactorily. If I wanted to do my other lots I would need an additional battery or wait for this one to charge up whereas with the gas mower just continue on. I recharged the battery once again to full capacity, which took 5 hours. This time I did some neighbor's yards, one of which had a mound area that was 2' taller than the other parts of the lawn. The lawnmower easily climbed up to the top and around the sides. The mower ran exactly 36 minutes. I dusted it off as you are not to spray water on it. I then brought the battery up to 30% ready for next use and recharge. It can be stored in a horizontal position or vertically and the handle folds. The feature I really like is the 7 position single point height adjustment that allows you to select the mowing height with one motion on all 4 wheels. A neighbor only wanted his cut to 3" and I had to raise it but with this feature it was easy to change to any desired height. You have to plan ahead to use the the mower and charge the battery before use. The mower is environmentally friendly and no gas!

                            Do not buy this
Shuts off when self propelled is engaged. A simple google search would have shown me this is a very common issue. Ryobi support is not good. Stay away from this mower

                              Good features, poor design
I bought the mower 3 summers ago, and the cut was very good. It's very easy to setup and use. However, I have had problems with the pins holding up the handles breaking and now struggle to use the mower with only 1 intact pin.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I Loved this mower until the self propelled stopped working. Only 3 years old and now needs a major repair. Very disappointed

Battery does not hold a charge. Terrible Quality
Within 3 weeks of owning this lawn mower the two batteries would not hold a charge for longer than 10 minutes, no the 60 minutes it advertised. Ryobi they sent me 2 new batteries, but the problem continued, the battery would be fully charge and die after 10 minutes, I would recharge to 100% but this time the batteries would only last 5 minutes. There is not a service center within 1 hours from where I live (a major city) and they will not work with me to resolve the problem. DO NOT BUY

                                      Problematic wheel
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this device and tried using it he very first and alas!, the left front wheel came off and has been coming offf ever since then. I had no idea this was going to be an issue or else I wouldn’t have bought it. I am totally exasperated with this! After spending a couple of hundreds of dollars, this is not what I bargained for

                                        Not worth the trouble
Bought this mower about 1.5 years ago. Used it maybe 20 times. Battery is now defective and won't charge. $220 to replace is ridiculous! That's more than half what I paid for the mower. besides the battery issue, I also have issues with the handle extension staying fully extended. wouldn't care, if not for the fact that the mower will not run when the extension is even slightly not extended.

Ryobi I got this one right
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this mower a few months ago to investigate the electric powered mower product. This is a great product. I have a medium sized yard (1/3 acre), that is flat. I can mow the front and back using 1 & 1/2 batteries. The best feature is the ease of starting and stopping. Just push the button and it starts. It cuts the grass very well and I have it on the next to lowest height. The grass catcher bag is easy to remove, empty and install. I have now started to use the mulching function which is working very well. I cannot assess the long term operation of this mower, but based on several months of using it, this is a better product than gas powered walk behind mowers. Great job Ryobi! I will recommend this to my friends.
