Used to buy a Minwax product which actually left a clear, satin finish. This product left a dark (almost walnut) finish on my properly prepped oak exterior bench. Despite low humidity and temps in the 70's to 80's. the first coat took over 12 hours to dry until it was no longer tacky. I have another project coming up and will search for a store selling the Minwax product I have used and enjoyed for several years.

Let's see if we can clear things up. Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane dries with a golden glow which gives an amber hue. If you want a crystal clear finish we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane.

Great finish, brings out wood color and pattern

I am using the oil based Varathane urethane on my outdoor Adirondack chairs. It has been recommended by others who have done the same. It does go on smooth and has a very nice finish.
Only drawback; it takes a while to dry thoroughly, usually overnight to touch and 48 hours to work with.
This is my second can in one month. It's a do again for me.

Good and thick. The color came out alot lighter then what was said, chocolate is not a reddish light brown color. Had to go buy another brand that we had used years ago. Waste of money.

The claim was a clear semi-gloss. The coating turned out to be brown. I don't know if the product was bad or the manufacturer's claim just plain wrong. Very disappointed in Varathane. I can't return the can of varnish now that it has been opened.

Let's talk about this, Robert! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane will be clear, it will have a warm, golden tone to it. This is common with oil-based wood finishes. If wanting a crystal clear finish, we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane instead.

Looks good as any other outdoor polyurethane varnish I’ve previously used. I recommend applying it this with a white Chinese bristle-brush to efficiently control the flow, and to apply three thin coats rather than one heavier coat. When applied over stained/sealed wood, the varnish dries to a beautiful flat finish. I prefer this over the glossy product, which looks too streaky IMHO.
