Let's see what we can figure out. Once the Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Filler has been applied to the repair, it should be sanded to smooth out the surface even with the rest of the wood, at which point stain should be able to penetrate the surface. We want to hear more about your experience and try to make things right with you. Please feel free to call us at 800-901-0411 to talk about this more and make sure to have the product handy! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

New swear words
One of the most frustrating items I’ve used. It starts too “dry” in can, cures during 2 min mix time and is a general failure on a fairly simple task. When wood rot is in an upper story window that is fixed window that means you are on a ladder up high, not easy in the first place. Then a product that just can’t make it from mix on 2nd floor and climb to upper window before curing … crickey! A nerve racking period. Now likely have to carve out this stuff while on ladder, even less fun!

Thank you for reaching out, Jim. We appreciate you sharing your experience with Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Filler. Since this is a two-part product, it does have a limited pot life once mixed. Exposure to direct sunlight can shorten this pot life as well.

    Very Difficult to Work With
The instructions tell you to mix in the hardener for two minutes. If you do this, you will not be able to use the filler at all because it has already become too rubber-like. You must put the hardener in, mix it for a few seconds, then start applying. Even then, you don't have much time until the mix becomes a crumbly mess. You must be prepared to mix in hardener and apply right away with no corrections. Wait two days to sand. Try Min Wax wood filler instead--it's better.

That was not the intention, John. The dry time of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Filler can be impacted by temperatures as well as humidity. We appreciate you sharing this with us, and we'll be sure to forward it appropriately. Easy to mix. I used a small scale but it’s not really necessary. Mix (15 secs) and use fast if you are in the heat like I was as it will dry very fast. Once it starts to dry (1 min or so) you can no longer use it. Other than that it worked great for some rotted out plywood corners in my camper storage box!

Total junk. Don’t waste your money. It was too dry and did not adhere properly. Not a mixing agent problem. Poor texture and quality from the factory.

Let's see what we can figure out, Emma. Before using Varathane Wood Filler, be sure to properly mix as directed on the label, this will ensure the product has excellent consistency. Working quickly, spread a thin layer of mixture over the area to be repaired using a plastic putty knife. Repeat with several thin layers until desired thickness is achieved. Slower dry times will occur if cooler than room temperature (70ºF). After an additional 15 minutes, the Wood Filler can be sanded, planed or filed. Once completely hardened, it can be painted or stained.

It’s a 2 part epoxy type of filler. Great for rotted wood that needs repair before paint. Wear gloves. Mixing ratio is difficult. First attempt set up on me 5min instead of 15min. Mix small amounts and works fast. Spreads smooth at first, but gets chunky as it sets up.

      Not easy to use
I had some fairly large voids in the windmills on my basement. Being impatience I mixed up what was probably too large a batch and eyeballed the 50 to 1 hardener, maybe used too much or something. Mixed thoroughly and did not managed to get any on the windowsill before it started to dry and became unworkable. Lesson learned , headed back to the store for the Durhams , probably better suited for someone of my skill set..

If more hardener is used, our Varathane Wood Filler may harden too quickly to be applied. We recommend using a smaller amount of the hardener to ensure the product remains workable, a 50:1 ratio is best for this product. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

The mix ratio is difficult to figure out, so it either dries too fast or doesn’t dry at all. If you don’t choose to stain it, it looks like grey bondo not wood, and it smells toxic for days. This is NOT good for a small or fast diy project, this is for large more professional jobs, in a well ventilated work space, look for something easier to use!

Thanks for sharing your experience. When mixing Varathane Wood Filler, scoop the appropriate amount of wood filler into the plastic cap. Next, squeeze wood cream hardener, approximately1:50 ratio, onto the wood filler. Thoroughly mix for approximately 2 minutes until you get a uniform color. Mix only the amount that can be used within 15 minutes. Give us a call at 800-901-0411, so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.

Varathane Wood Filler Very Poor Product
Hardens and looses workability within less than five minutes at 80 degrees. Absolutely worthless.

User friendly product that really works!
Excellent product that I'd buy again. Must work expeditiously after hardener added. Goes on easily, adheres well and drys fast. Must work expeditiously after hardener added. Sanding provides a smooth hard surface that took added screws securely the next day. Putting on in layers in thick spots (>1/4-3/8 thick) is important as overly thick areas can stay soft for extended period. The consistency of the material allows it to go onto vertical surfaces without sagging or running. Only issue for me was estimating 50:1 filler:hardener ratio. One application dried too quickly, while one was prolonged. Got better with experience with product.

It’s not obvious when you buy it but this substance is GRAY! in color. The only wood it’s going to match is driftwood. Mixing the hardener in correctly is very tricky. I never got a working time of more than 4 minutes. I gave up on it. Do yourself a favor and buy another product. I hope to return the unused portion for credit.

We will be sure to share that with our internal teams. If desired, this filler can be sanded, stained, top-coated or painted once dry if wanting to change the color.

Horrible - the worst wood filler of them all
Mixed together per directions. Started applying on a vertical patch but was too thin to stay in place without dropping.... but as I was molding the thin paste, the rest of the material mixed in the bucket hardened and became crumbly. All within 5 minutes of mixing (contrary to the 15 min working time stated in directions). Total disaster. Any other wood filler brand works better - best option is WoodEpox but even Miniwax or DAP wood filler is way better (and cheaper!)

            Works as advertised
relatively easy to work with, but getting the right proportion of filler and hardener takes some trial and error. go easy with the hardener. Too much and it will harden very fast before having time to apply. Multiple thin coats is the key to sucess.
