Unbelievably Bad
I needed to fix a crack in my door frame so I picked this up and BOY DO I REGRET THAT! It’s so hard to work with, it just peels and pills all over the place, you absolutely can not use a putty knife, it won’t adhere to painted wood, it falls right off onto the floor. If you try to press it into place it picks up your finger print, but if you try to wet your finger and run it through like with chalk then it peels off. You’d be better off making a repair with spit and cottage balls.

      Definitely not white
If your trim (or other wood item) is a true white, this filler isn't white. I stopped after 2 nail holes because instead of tiny holes (that you can tell are installation because they're all perfectly aligned), it looks like dirty holes. I like that it didn't dry as fast as the other fillers, but that's it. That said, I've had antique white trim and bright white filler stands out there too. Keep in mind though that this isn't antique white or ivory. It's a gray white.

Thank you for your feedback! Since the stain or paint used on the surface can vary from manufacture or wood species used, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Putty in a test area first to ensure the desired color.

3.75 ounce Varathane WHITE WOOD PUTTY. This white wood putty is designed to fill nail holes and defects in wood. Use as the final process in finishing wood projects, such as moulding installations, and window and door installations. This is an interior product. Rust-oleum is the parent company of Varathane which produces this excellent wood putty. The application couldn't be simpler, put some putty on your finger or a putty knife and press and swipe the hole. Complete the process by painting or staining.

This is a non-hardening putty, so you're not really supposed to sand this once applied. It's for filling small holes, like nail holes. I applied some to a small nick in a cheap cube storage bookshelf my wife bought years ago. After several moves, it had a small chip that came out of the side. Nothing major, but why not fix it if it's in our living room area? All I wanted was just enough coverage to not show the small cut and that was it. This worked as I planned. It was easy to apply and easy to work with. I'd compare the consistency to play dough. Looking at the cube storage from anything more than a couple feet away, and you can't tell that this product was applied at all, which is exactly what I wanted.

We had a hole in our dining room floor that I wanted to patch, and I decided to try some of this Varathane wood putty. I'm very satisfied with the results! It’s a super easy low mess wood putty that resembles the consistency of crafting clay before it is applied. PROS *Easy to use *Low mess *Inexpensive *Great container *Doesn't crack or shrink *Good instructions CONS *It does have a smell, but it isn't super strong and it dissipates pretty fast 5 out of 5 stars I recommend this product!

got one jar of this stuff and it goes a long way, i like the natural filler so stain will match with it blend better with the wood. the material is soft and pliable easy to use without need really for a putty knife. if tried it on several species of wood and it does blend well and except stain well. if it does not harden it should look good and last over time

I have a kitchen table that has been in my family for 33 years. Solid wood table, but it has some wear and tear on the table top. I wanted to patch up some small holes and got this putty in hopes that it would fix the table. I got two different colors so I could blend them. Followed the directions and mixed the two colors to match the varying colors on the table. The directions say it can't be sanded.

Color matching your hardwood floor is always a challenge. Glad I can get this in small sizes. I have used another brand basic wood putty that I was not happy with so I never finished filling in the holes. It flaked off from the floor and it just looked...well...awful. I tested this putty distributed by the "Rust-Oleum" company and I am very satisfied. The color didn't quite match but the quality of the putty is super. No flakes noticed and the putty blended smoothly. It was easy to apply and rub into the holes and gaps. The excess was easily cleaned up with my fingers. The putty despite not matching did "blend" into the floor gaps very nicely. No water needed to clean up, you can use a dry rag or your fingers or putty knife to wipe up the excess. I am finding that matching my unique hardwood stain quite a challenge. no one seems to make my stain :( So I mixed this putty with a cherry putty to try and get a closer color match and well that idea worked out with mixed results. The putty didn't really blend together well as I would have hoped but I did manage to achieve a closer color match of my hard wood floor but I would say it is easier to just get the closest pre-mixed color putty and use that color for filling in holes/gaps.

This review is on Varathane's Red Mahogany Wood Putty. This stuff really worked well on my red mahogany wood floor. The color of my floor was slightly fadded and luckily so was the color that came in the jar. It went on smoothly and dried (non hardening) rather quickly. Because it's non-hardening it cleans up very easily. The other unique thing that happened was that when I completely filled and lightly sanded the area smooth it actually looked exactly like a natural knot in the wood.

This is a quality wood putty by a well respected corporation Rust-Oleum . We use many of the Rust-Oleum products especially their metal paints and have always been satisfied with their quality. I like the non shrink claims as I have used other products that once used and stored are hard because of my negligence. Since theoretically it will not shrink I hope to apply just once and forget it. We recently installed hardwood floors in our house and needed something to help filling in the occasional deep scratch or hole that will occur from time to time. We have a dark finish with multiple shades so its pretty much a no brainer to use a dark wood putty as it will blend in with the other finish details of our floor. I have full confidence this putty will meet my needs.

I got this putty to patch holes in my hardwood floor, where nail holes showed from removing the tack stips that held the carpet in place. Thi is a light colored putty, it has a good consistency, and was very east to work with. I applied it with a small putty knife, and worked with the grain of the flooring. There was very little mess and it cleaned up easily.Being a small sample it was still enough to fill all the nail holes I wished to cover at this time.

This is a non-hardening puddy, That being said if this is what your looking for the product spreads, fills and levels very good. The Ebony color is great fill in dark thin cracks , nail holes etc. This product can be tinted with same puddy line products to lighten etc. Instructions are in very small print , personally I would not have gotten this knowing it was non-hardening. But for its intended use it is a very good product and does what its intened.

I selected this wood putty to cover scrapes on the leg of a chair caused by a wheelchair. It definitely has the consistency of putty, as you can see in the photo. Following the directions I applied using gloves and just my finger. It doesn’t work very well for smooth scrapes and that’s not necessarily the fault of the product. I believe it would work very well to patch minor holes and gouges so this was not necessarily the product I needed for my repair. I would recommend it for other applications due to its staining qualities and smooth consistency.

We have used this product for years and I cannot recommend it enough for filling nails in cabinets. We have had many to fill after our kitchen remodel and this product does it perfectly every time. It dries white and covers all those depressions from the nails that I just cannot stand to look at after the cabinets have been installed. Often the installers don't take the time to cover them up, but with this product, it will make the cabinets look very finished and complete. I have used this product on trim molding, door frames, bath cabinets, mirror trims and just about everything where I don't want to see those depressions and small nails. I LOVE this product. It is easy to apply and it dries perfectly. This is a one-time application. I have never had to come back and treat the area again. This is a name brand to trust and one that I highly recommend.

Well I did not get a six pack of this outstanding putty. Varathane has been around for awhile, have come to trust their products for quite sometime. So it was of no surprise that their Blond Wood putty, meet and exceeded my expectations. I used the putty on two areas on my barn door, followed instructions for application, and result was indiscernible, look at pics you can hardly see the stuff.

This Varathane non hardening wood putty was just what I needed to fill some screw holes in a door frame. It is extremely easy to work with and a little goes a long way. No strong odors or anything and it wipes right off. In my picture with the wood putty in the holes, the top hole has not been wiped yet, the bottom one has. I do know that it comes in different colors and I do know that whites are hard to match but it is very simple for me to dab some matching white paint on the filled holes. 24 hours later, no shrinking. It took about 3 minutes to complete my job. What's better than that?!

It's a good quality wood putty. Easy to work with by hand. Simply press it into the hole/crack and wipe the excess off with a paper towel (what I used). The repaired area is cleanly filled. My only concern is the color. In my case the baseboard and quarter-round are pure white. This product is off-white (when initially applied and dry). If I use this for my trim I'd have to use a paint touch-up. I find pure white caulk works best for me, simply put it on and forget it (dries pure white).

        Non-hardening
Read the label! The color of the wood putty is great, but if you want to use it in an application where it needs to harden don't waste your time! It will only harden to the consistency of play-do. I'll be sure to tag the label next time.

          NOT a general use product
This product is hard to review because I assume it has a use for something. But it is NOT a general use wood putty. It cannot be painted according to manufacturer, so the putty color has to exactly match the object to be treated. I bought the white color to fill nail holes in white trim and it's NOT white. The nail hole fills show up as gray blobs against the white trim. I have no choice but to paint over it, perhaps after skimming a layer of paintable flexible caulk over it. Buyer beware!

Was dry. Crumbled trying to apply. Shrunk up and had to reapply. “White” is more eggshell than bright white. Won’t buy again and won’t recommend either.
