How to Choose an Iron

When you’re shopping for irons, consider the type of iron and the wattage you’d like. The more wattage your iron has, the more electricity it uses. Steam Iron vs Dry Iron

A steam iron has a water receptacle. Some irons have water tanks, but most have a water holder within the iron. The iron heats the water, which turns it into steam. The steam penetrates the fabric, helping release wrinkles. Many steam irons let you control when you release the steam and don’t emit non-stop, but it will depend on your iron. Some irons do offer continuous steam, but it’s a special feature and not a given.

A dry iron uses heat and pressure to force out wrinkles. Use them on low heat for fabrics that can’t tolerate steam, like silks, wools, and polyester. If you can’t find a dry iron, you can use a steam iron the same way. In fact, if your iron has a steam shot control, use it as a dry iron by just utilizing the heat and not pressing the steam release button.

Iron Wattage

The higher the iron wattage, the faster it warms up and the hotter it gets. If you press a lot of cotton shirts or do last-minute ironing, having an iron that heats up quickly may be a lifesaver. You’ll want to choose a high-watt iron. If not, you may not be using high-heat options often, so look at our low-wattage irons from 800W and less. Of course, we have medium-range wattages, too. Steam irons with a higher wattage will likely cost more than low-wattage irons.

Iron Features

Steam irons offer a range of features. A retractable cord cuts down on how often you’re moving your cord when ironing the fabric. Steam shot and mist buttons let you control how much steam you get and when. An auto-shutoff removes the stress of wondering if you turned off the iron. More steam holes result in more precisely and evenly distributed steam. Most irons label temperature settings by fabric type, so you can feel certain that you won’t damage your clothing if you follow the instructions.

Ironing Different Fabric Types

Natural fabrics like suede and silk, fabrics with nap like velvet, and plastic fabrics, including PVC or faux leather, shouldn’t be steamed or pressed with a hot iron. They may melt or get water spots. Always check your fabric labels for care instructions. If you can’t find a label, do a spot check on a hidden inside corner of your fabric to see how it responds to heat or water.

Regardless of whether you’re using a steam iron or a dry iron, always use a press cloth to prevent shiny spots and to protect your garments from any mineral buildup that may fall out of the steam holes. A press cloth is a thin, clean cotton or muslin fabric you place over your clothes to add a layer of protection. As for the buildup, using distilled water cuts down on mineral deposits.
