How Do I Clean My Tiles? Use a non-abrasive, neutral cleaner. Vacuum frequently to remove abrasive dirt particles. Repeated use of acidic, harsh chemical cleaners will dull the appearance of your kitchen tile and other types.
How Do I Plan Out a Backsplash? Use graph paper to plan around outlets, cabinets, windows, appliances, etc. Consider centering your design behind a sink, cook top or other focal point. A minimal backsplash tile is usually 4” high. A wall splash, commonly used with subway tiles, extends to the base of the upper wall cabinets. Tile can be used anywhere in between, subject to your needs and creativity.
What Color Grout Should I Use? Grout is determined primarily by personal taste. You may match your grout color to match or contrast your tile. Keep in mind that very light colors may show dirt more quickly on outdoor tile and dark colors may show hard water deposits on bathroom tiles and shower tiles. Apply grout sealant per manufacturer’s instructions to maintain the color and integrity of your grout.
Sanded Or Non-Sanded Grout? Sanded grout is recommended for floor tile installations with grout lines 1/8” or greater. The sand adds strength to the installation. Non-sanded grout is recommended for grout lines 1/8” or smaller and for high gloss tiles, mosaic tiles or decorative tiles with more delicate finishes.
Can I Install Tiles Without Grout? No. Voids between tile will be seen and its strength will be compromised.
Does All Tile Have Matching Trim? Not all tiles have coordinating trims. For example, large fireplace tile may not have pre-made trim available, but the tile could be cut down to make custom trim pieces.
Are All Tiles Exact in Size? Some slight variations in size can exist in all types of tiles.
What is the difference Between Glazed and Unglazed Tile? Glazed tile is coated with a surface finish (silica) fused to the body of the tile by firing in a kiln at very high temperatures. Color, design and texture are adding in this process to make pattern look tiles and others. Unglazed tile gets its color from the pigment added to the clay that makes up the body of the tile. Colors are more limited but because the color is through and through, wear is not as visible. Unglazed porcelain tile is a good choice for heavy duty traffic areas and may be less slip resistant.
Is Ceramic Tile Cold? Ceramic tile is the same temperature as the surrounding air. Body temperature is usually warmer than the air, this causes a garage tile to feel cold to the touch.
Can I Drill a Hole in My Tile? Yes, you will need a diamond drill bit.
