There are a few key aspects to creating a Spanish Mediterranean Inspired space and we’re going to show you how to easily create one in your backyard in a few simple steps.
Our Backyard Before
When we moved into this house it was a “crayola box.” Every room was painted a different color - even the outside of the house! If you know me, I'm not the colorful type. Our dream for this home is to embody our Spanish roots and really create a Spanish Mediterranean Inspired backyard for us to enjoy summer entertaining and beyond.

Tips for Creating a Spanish Mediterranean Inspired Backyard
Use Neutral Paint Colors! Mediterranean homes typically feature warm neutral exterior colors, we repainted our exterior with a creamy white with brown undertones. Smoky White by Behr Paint is our go-to for a great warm neutral white.

Add Touches of Terra-cotta
If you live in Florida this popular 12x12 Florida tile is probably throughout your entire home including maybe your back porch, like us! Interior tile is not conducive to the exterior as it is slippery and doesn’t always do well with the elements.

We added natural terra-cotta tiles in place of the 12x12 ceramic interior tiles and boy did it nail the spanish mediterranean vibe! Since it’s natural stone we had to use a mortar specific for Natural stone like terra cotta clay tiles.

Create a Garden
There are lots of Mediterranean style gardens, but one thing that's similar across the board are tranquil blues, grays, greens and purples. Some plants that work well for this palette are cypress, lavender, rosemary, oregano, sage, olive trees, confederate jasmine, bougainvillea, thyme, Mexican feather grass, and buttonwood silver.

Simple Outdoor Furnishing
Believe it or not the garden is where Spanish Mediterranean spaces shine! So keeping to simple outdoor furniture is key. Use warm wood tones, woven materials and black metal furniture.

This Sevilla Rectangular Teak Outdoor Dining Table was the perfect fit for 6 chairs and could even accommodate 8 with smaller chairs.

We used warm wood toned outdoor furniture to keep the spanish color palette including this beautiful modern Noble House Oana Teak Brown Removable Cushions Wood Outdoor Lounge Chair with Beige Cushions and Jonah Teak Brown 3-Piece Wood Outdoor Sofa with Beige Cushions that can easily be converted into a sectional or single seats.
Outdoor Entertaining Essentials
A tranquil color palette calls for neutral place settings. The Home Depot offers so many amazing pieces that fit with a Spanish Mediterranean Style that are perfect for outdoor dining.

The Melamine Cotta Sandia Adobe Salad Plate (Set of 6) gives you the handmade pottery feel without the fragility and price tag! We also loved these speckled 222 Fifth Bryce 12-Piece Ivory Melamine Dinnerware Set to mix with the terra-cotta colored salad plates.

We can’t wait to see how you incorporate the spanish mediterranean design into your outdoors this summer!
