Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

How do I rent trucks and tools?

Stop by your local Rental Center to see what trucks or tools you can rent. If you'd like confirmation before you drive there, call first to inquire about a truck or tool. You can also read our truck rental or tool rental pages to see if what you need is offered at your store. For more info on renting tools, read these Tool Rental FAQs, including equipment terms and conditions.

Can I rent a tool for an hour?

Tool rentals start at four hour time slots. Simply choose the length of time that suits you. Small home improvement projects may only require a rental for a few hours, and we can accommodate large projects as well. You've got options to rent tools by the day, week, or month, too. If you need it longer than your initial rental period, call your Rental Center for an extension and avoid late fees.

When do I return the tools?

It's fine to return the tools early if you finish your project sooner than predicted, but on-time works, too. Just make sure to bring them back by the deadline listed on your rental paperwork. Please clean off residual dust, mud, and grime from the tool as well. If you need the tools longer, call the rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.

Can I choose how long to rent a truck?

Rent a moving van or truck for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes could be enough time. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on how long your project is. Be sure to factor in the drive between the job site and the store, as you'll need to bring it back to the same store you rented it from. Penske moving truck rentals allow round-trip options as well as one-way options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the terms and conditions before you select a van.

Should I refill the rental truck before I bring it back?

Yes, please fuel up the truck before you return it. Match the level of gas that was in the tank when you received the rental. When you don't refill the rental truck, you'll be hit with a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.

Do I just need a driver's license to rent a truck?

No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be over the age of 21. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a credit card hold or a deposit, too. We don't accept cash for Home Depot truck rentals, so please bring your credit card. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements, so read those if you plan to rent a Penske truck.
