I want to know if the vents are screened or not. I understand it needs ventilation, but we want to keep out the insects.
Asked by: Sam
Yes, the vent panels has screens. It's a 3-piece unit with the outside mounting plate -- vents -- and screen that "snaps" into the opening. Easy to install, or "unsnap" of you want to use the solid or clear plastic pane. Seems like a tight fit that should keep out bugs

Will this Bilco door keep the mice out? And can you open from the outside?
Asked by: woodstuff
Generally yes, but I did notice a small gap by the bottom corners that might allow a mouse to get through. But I think I can fix that problem with a little bit of foam -- like a pipe wrap. Yes you can open from the outside as long as the interior lock-bolt is not engaged. You can also buy an optional exterior key-lock set that allows you to lock or unlock the door from the outside.

Where can the color be seen before you order it and can it be painted?

Asked by: Tom
www.bilco.com, you can not paint Polyethylene. That's the beauty of it, nothing will stick to it.

Easy to assemble and install --- even with one person. Was worried about the strength of the "plastic" doors but well constructed and takes the weight of a person standing on the doors. Nice design -- simulated wood with curved top. Looks much better than a flat steel top. Also like the interchangeable side panels -- comes with screened vent, plastic window for light or solid panel depending on your preference.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement for 27 Year Old Steel Door My 27 year old steel Bilco door required annual painting to combat rust. I decided to replace it. It took my contractor only two hours to remove the old and install the new for which I paid $200. There was a little rubbing between the doors when closing, which I remedied with a little sanding. This might have been due to the installation, not the door. I also added foam weather stripping at the lower edge of the doors to further seal the edge. There are still some very small open areas when closed, but not much (think small critters). One of the screw sockets had not been fully drilled at the factory. I remedied that as well. The door cylinders allow the door to close slowly, no banging. We've had torrential rains since installation; the door is very rain tight. I rated it 4 of 5 stars due to the issues described above. I am very pleased with the door and installation. I should have done it sooner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good door My wife and I needed to replace an old steel Bilco door that was on our bulkhead. I decided to go with the Ultra model because it has a longer guarantee and had gotten good reviews. It was easy to put together and install, but the only concern I have is watering pooling up right where the twelve-inch extension meets the house since it seems lower that the piece next to it. I've only had it on a few days and it hasn't rained yet, but it's just a concern. I am planning on getting a longer and wider piece of flashing for it because the one that came with it doesn't seem that it's going to do the job. Overall, though, it is an improvement over what we had. The only major downer was that HD shows this on their web site as being white (which is the color I wanted), but a cream-colored one arrived. It would have been great if HD had just clearly stated that white wasn't available online, but they didn't.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from will not rust and no maintenance Excellent product, looks very nice and I like the 10 year no maintenance warranty. As a D I Y person I found the Installation instructions to be poor. Photo’s depicting the assembling process is not clear; also hardware package needs to be labeled. A good idea would be to make an assembling and installation instructing video on YouTube.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and easy maintenance I've installed dozens of these door systems, and to this day, I've had very few callbacks of any sort. The product itself wasn't ever a problem, but simply misplacement of a sprinkler head, or excessive tree leaves (debris) causing the water channels to be blocked. These ultimately were attributed to causing the door system to leak during heavy rains. The systems are designed "NOT" to be hermetically sealed with gaskets, therefore they require air to enter the bulkhead / stairwell area. This helps with keeping internal temperatures cooler during summer months. The perimeter of each door has a specifically designed spacing between the housing, allowing air to enter, creating / and exchanging air currents in the well area, in conjunction with the the housing side vents. This helps promote moisture evaporation, and help keep the unit dry inside. These door systems are essentially like any other door system to your home. They need to be utilized, and maintained, which simply means to be cleaned from time to time, otherwise they can get overwhelmed by wind driven debris. It goes without saying that you wouldn't allow your front entry door to become clogged with leaves, dust, dirt and bugs, so why should this door be any different ? With no painted surfaces, other than the powder coated hinges on the inside, the exteriors are as maintenance free as physically possible, requiring just a soap and water bath once or twice a year, more or less, depending on the homes particular environmental conditions, and orientation of sun exposure. This is an ideal situation for those of us who prefer not to spend their weekends painting part of their home as a maintenance regime would require.

This is a follow up to my prior review which was contingent upon Home Depot's response. The review probably seems contradictory but there is a reason. I like the door and I believe it is of good quality overall. The problem with mine is that one of the nuts that hold the door to the hinge stripped. The nuts are insert type nuts screwed into the plastic door during manufacturing. Unfortunately for me, one of the insert nuts was clogged with plastic from the door during manufacturing and when my contractor tried to fasten the bolt it would not tighten and ultimately stripped. May seem like a small deal but when you pay over a $1,000 for a plastic door one would hope everything would be right. Home Depot believes otherwise and now I'm stuck with the door.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from stay away from this door THE ONLY THING THAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS DOOR IS THAT IT IS NOT METAL. NO PAINTING OR MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. OTHER THAN THAT, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS DOOR FOR SEVERAL REASONS: 1. THE BOTTOM OF THE DOORS ARE NOT SHAPED/SLOPED CORRECTLY. WHEN IT RAINS, THE WAER FOLLOWS THE BOTTOM EDGE, CONTACTS THE CAULKING ALONG THE ALUMINUM SILL AND RUNS INSIDE. I WAS ABLE TO FIX THIS BY FASTENING SOME VINYL SIDING TO THE BOTTOM EDGE WITH DOUBLE-SIDED MOULDING TAPE. I SHAPED IT SO THE WATER RUNS AWAY FROM THE CEMENT. 2. THE HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE PLASTIC IS THE WORST THING ABOUT THIS DOOR. BILCO SAYS TO CAULK USING A POLYURETHANE BASE SEALANT. IT STICKS TO THE CEMENT GREAT, BUT NOT THE PLASTIC. AFTER A COOL NIGHT, THE NEXT DAY THE PLASTIC HAD CONTRACTED AND PULLED AWAY FROM THE CAULK. A SHORT TIME AFTER THAT, WE HAD A RAIN AND YOU GUESSED IT, I HAD WATER LEAKING INSIDE. I USED A PROFESSIONAL GRADE POLYURETHANE, WHICH WHEN I COMPARED IT TO WHAT BILCO SELLS, HAS THE SAME SPECIFICATIONS(AND BILCO CHARGED TWICE WHAT YOU CAN GET IT AT HOME DEPOT). AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I FOULD OUT THERE IS NOT A CAULKING ON THE MARKET THAT WILL STICK TO HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE. SO WHY THE HECK SOMEONE AT BILCO DIDN,T FIGURE THAT OUT BEFORE THEY MADE THESE DOORS, I DON’T HAVE A CLUE. 3. AND LASTLY, THE ALUMINUM STRIP THEY PROVIDE THAT IS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE HOUSE, TO RUN THE WATER AWAY FROM IT, ISN’T EVEN LONG ENOUGH TO COVER THE WIDTH OF THE DOOR. AND WHAT ABOUT UP AND DOWN THE SIDES THAT ATTACH TO THE HOUSE? THEY PROVIDED NOTHING THERE FOR THAT. I DID HAVE SOME VINYL J-CHANNEL WHICH I USED TO GO AROUND THE WHOLE DOOR.

The reason for the average rating is due to one of the threaded sections on the door stripped due to a manufacturing defect. I will be working with Home Depot and if they replace the door and it works, I would rate this product good to excellent.
