I had a small pool in our backyard that killed our grass and a bald patch in the front yard. When the kids outgrew the pool I decided to get the grass back in shape. Having a small hand spreader to do these small projects made life easier. It is a well made spreader and works great for its intended purpose. The seeds worked and now my lawn is looking much better.

This spreader works great. The seed I have is coated with a fertilizer. My previous spreader would clog after a few minutes using this type of seed. Not with this spreader. It has three different opening settings, which allows the seed to not clog. The hand crank works very smoothly and spreads very evenly. I had a battery powered spreader before and it always clogged. As I said before, not with this spreader. This hand operated model beats my old one, hands down.

This is a well made, apparently all plastic spreader which, means you don't have to worry about it corroding on you. The 1.6 L hopper bin will hold enough material for most home projects and can be useful in a tight area. There are three intermediate settings to use for fine to coarse material and they all fed smoothly so that you can get a even spread if the material you are using. I would recommend the product, especially if you have a small project to complete.

The shape and weight of this spreader makes it great for my 5000 sq ft yard! I’ve always used a hand spreader, and decided to try this one due to the “narrow funnel” shape of it - it really made spreading easier and I was impressed that I had no problems spreading out the entire granular application. My previous spreader would sometimes be hard to “get turning” when it was full, this was very easy to spin from the beginning - and then continued to provide an even application as the product dwindled down. Easy to adjust the distribution amount and helped me do the job easily and efficiently.

I recently moved into a large house with a small yard. I needed to fertilize the small front yard. I got the Chapin hand crank spreader for this purpose. The spreader is light weight and easy to use. There is a handle adjustment to set the size of the hopper opening depending on the size of material you are spreading. The All Natural Fertilizer I used was small pellets and required a small opening. Squeezing the handle trigger opens the sliding door to allow the spreading material to drop onto the spinning spreader wheel, which is operated by turning the hand crank. If you don't have good finger strength on your left hand, you can set the opening to max (3) and only pull the trigger lightly. The fertilizer spread quickly and evenly as I walked slowly around the yard. I really like this spreader and highly recommend it.

This Chapin 1.6 l/0.4 Gal. All Season Poly Hand Crank Spreader for Seeds, Fertilizer and Ice Melt is just what I needed! I have some small areas and spots in my yard that grass seed or fertilizer need to be so I don't waste any. My pull behind spreader can't get those area's without flinging it everywhere I don't need it. This thing is great for that, hold it low and wear a mask for the fertilizer! You can vary the distance it throws the product by the speed you crank the handle. You can adjust how much it throws by the adjustment on the hand grip that opens or closes a door at the bottom of the hopper. I'm sure it will work well for ice melt too. No more reaching in a bag over and over to toss seed or whatever! I don't see anything that will corrode either.

The Chapin hand crank multipurpose spreader is good quality for the price. It's not the best or most expensive but has good value. I tested it with fertilizer and the recommended setting and when spreading the fertilizer the crank kept getting stuck. I then used it for applying granular ant killer and it worked flawlessly. I would purchase this spreader for that reason only. I have to put down fire ant killer monthly. This spreader could also be used for small lawns.

I have small areas of grass where a hand held spreader works best. Where setting 1 works best for broadcasting fine grass seed, setting 3 or fertilizer, setting 5 lays down the more course gypsum for neutralizing road salt. The spreader is comfortable to hold and easy to operate. It is assembled from sturdy polymer materials with no metal parts to rust. The hopper holds 1 1/2 quarts of product which is sufficient for small jobs.

Solid low end hand held spreader. I occasionally need a hand held spreader for a small areas and repairs. I do not need or wanted to pay for a deluxe model so this meets my needs.
It's finally warming up and used my new hand held spreader to over seed and spread some starter fertilizer. Had no problems with either. The tub is large and holds plenty and the handle and sprayer worked well with an even distribution. The entire unit is plastic, everything seems to work and be connected together. I had no difficulties using it.
I did use the lowest setting. The directions indicate there are 3 settings but really there are more with half steps. I used the lowest (setting 1) or smallest opening because that pulled the slot just under half open, more than enough. Near the end I needed to shake the spreader to move the fertilizer to the slot to have it drop out. The little plastic piece that spins to move the contains doesn't go over the opening. No biggie I do this with my full size spreader also.
Spring has not official arrived, but winter never came so trying to get a head start. I will be using this spreader more as Spring arrives for a variety of applications. It feels solid and i believe it will hold up.

The spreader looks to be constructed of all heavy duty plastic so there shouldn't be any rusted parts like on big spreaders. It is lightweight and easy tot hold in one hand while cranking. There is a small well marked lever on the side with 5 flow settings that set the gate opening. The handle has an easy to activate trigger to start the flow while cranking. I tried grass seed first at the lowest flow setting. The spreader sent the seed in front in a arc but even at the lowest flow setting the seed was dispatched very quickly. Next I tried 10-10-10 fertilizer on the lowest setting. It spread well at first but then the crank jammed and I could not clear the jam to continue. I had to empty the contents to clear the jam that might have been a bit of grass seed. I tried again with a full tray without incident. I think this will work well to broadcast fertilizer but the flow is to great for seed distribution.
