A:  Good Morning, The standards are to be used in conjunction with the hang track to support the shelves on the adjustable mount system. You can see the instructions for a kit here: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/c7/c755e1fd-7677-4e04-96a3-af5712b10aed.pdf We hope this helps. Thank you for your inquiry.

Q:Why do I need the hang track if I'm mounting directly to studs?

A:  Good Morning Zeuchy, The MaxLoad system will support 100lbs per linear foot if installed per manufacturer guidelines which includes using the hang track as support for the standards. If manufacturer guidelines are not followed during installation you void the warranty.

A:  You may be confusing the two types of standards that you can purchase at your local Home Depot store. There are standards you can screw directly to the wall studs without a hang track and place a wood shelf to hold books for example. However, the challenge is trying to level all the standards. ClosetMaid developed a four (4) component system that takes in consideration not only the level, but also the plumb and extra security by using a hang track that is secured to all the studs too. The hang track is the first step in ensuring you have a complete level unit since most walls are never plumb (wood studs not crowned correctly or not fully dimensional). It also acts as another support since the vertical standards hang from the hang track (there is a notch in the upper portion of the standard). Once you have the hang track level and secured to the wall with construction screws, you slide the notched standards onto the hang track and move them over the wood studs you found with a stud finder. You don't screw the notched standards yet. You add the shelf brackets where you want them not covering up any of the holes where you would screw the standards into the wall. Then you add the shelves. Once you are pleased where everything is, you then screw all of the notched standards to the wall.

A:  I guess that you wouldn't need them if you were always going to locate and use a stud. In my situation, that wasn't always the case. However, with the hang track installed, I was able to "dry fit" the vertical rails, brackets, and shelves before attaching everything to the wall to ensure a good look over the 25'+ run of shelving.

Pro: Long enough for job, good holes for connecting bracket. Con: Usage: place on wall studs only. Don't skimp. Really need to use five on the 84" track for proper support.

The Closetmaid maximum load shelving was easy to install and more robust than the Elfa alternative. For the garage, I'm happy knowing that the shelves can support the extra weight.
