Q:If I use both the rail and shoe with fillet and install the appropriate square balusters, should I also drill holes in the rail and shoe to accept and secure the balusters or is the fillet structural enough to secure the balusters?

Answer This Question

A: Hi Keith, thanks for the question. Typically, the fillet is attached using finish nails, and installed in the handrail and/or shoe rail between the square balusters. Usually, that is structural enough to hold the square balusters in place, but toe-nailing the balusters as well would make the entire balustrade more firm. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

Q:Hello, how does the hand rail get attached to the newel post? Is there a separate piece needed.

    Answer This Question

A: Hi ALC, thank you for the question. There are several different methods to use when joining handrail to a newel post. The Rail Bolt Kit (HD# 202088478) and a Rail Bolt Wrench (HD# 205864570) is one way to join them together. Using the Spring Bolt Rail to Post kit (HD# 202755360) is another method for joining one end of handrail to a newel. Or, if you're joining two ends of level rail that run between newel posts, the Spring Bolt Rail to Post End Kit (HD# 202756681) is also recommended. If you have additional questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you!

Q:What does the fillet do/ what is it for?

        Answer This Question

A: Hi Smadge, great question! We're happy to answer it for you. The fillet is used to separate the square tops (and sometimes square bottoms) of balusters. If you're choice of style is a square top, wood baluster, we suggest using "plowed rail," which comes with a groove down the middle of the bottom of the rail. The square tops of wood balusters fit into this groove, and the fillet is cut into small pieces (3-3/4" or less), and is placed between the square tops of the balusters. They are then nailed in place, so they have a decorative and structural aspect to them.

I mentioned that fillet can separate the square bottoms of balusters as well. We sell "shoe rail" that also has fillet, and it's used for the same purpose that it has with handrails - separate the square bottoms of balusters. It's installed the same way, and has the decorative and structural aspect as well.

If you have additional questions, post them here, and we’ll reply as quickly as we can. Or, you may call our Customer Service Line at 678-455-5188 (M-F, 8-4 ET) where we can assist you with most any question you have. Thank you!

Beware of Polar...Two VERY different woods
Don't order poplar unless you plan to paint! After paying a contractor to install the new stair rail system, When I stained it, there was a very stark difference in the wood...one side looks walnut while the other side looks maple. Home Depot will only discount the railing, UNLESS I want to pay the contractor to uninstall it, return it for a replacement and pay a contractor to reinstall the new rail. Either way I lose big time. I am not happy at all!! Painting it is not a good option but that is not going to look good with my fancy metal balusters and not the look I was trying to achieve. Home Depot should do better when it is a quality of product issue and not a consumer issue.

Hi Susie - We are sorry you've had this experience. The reason we state that Poplar is a paint grade wood, is because this particular species can have very stark contrast in wood color. We recommend painting this particular species to attain an even appearance. If you prefer to use stain, we always recommend to use a red oak or maple species of wood! SureWood-LNL

Our project turned out beautifully. Though poplar wood doesn't typically stain evenly, it was fine for our purposes. We used a pre-stain product and the finish was still a bit blotchy. I ended up "painting" the areas where the stain didn't take using a small paintbrush and dabbing and stroking the stain onto the wood. The "painted" areas took longer to dry but looks like natural wood grain.

Hi Good, thanks for your detailed review. There is a product called a stain conditioner that minimize the absorption of stain into wood grain, allowing for a more even appearance after the product is finished. Consult with the Associates in the Paint Department for their recommendations. Thank you. SureWood-LNL
