It depends on the construction of the ladder and its weight. Please contact the manufacturer, or review the installation instructions, for their recommendations for replacement parts.

Do you have the k value for this spring?

Asked by chube1234567 October 17, 2016

Answer

I have this spring. Based on some information measurements in my garage with lifting weights, the k appears to be in the range of about -750 N/m above approx 10 lbs. I had no way to determine initial tension, but a 3.3lb weight hung produced no displacement (light between coils). At 15 lb I saw about 2.8 inches displacement, at 20lb a little under 5 inches displacement, and at 25lb about 5.8 inches displacement. Interpolating these values shows an intercept around 10lb, so I assume that's the initial tension. Safe working load is listed as 35 lb so I didn't test above 25lb. Hope this helps - sorry, I don't have an Instron.

how long can it safely stretch?

Asked by Rudy March 1, 2015

Answer

The spring can be stretched twice its length.

Seems sturdy so far, perfect for closing a gate.Needed some Goo-Gone to get all of the packaging residue off, but not nearly as bad as I've read in reviews of other springs.

It works just like one would imagine, "a helical metal coil, that can be pressed or pulled but returns to its former shape when released, used chiefly to exert constant tension or absorb movement."
