Q:What is the wire diameter for this Everbilt 1 in. x 12 in. Zinc-Plated Extension Spring?

Answer This Question

A:  Sorry, Supplier Quality is in err, no way the spring wire is 0.013". Maybe off by a factor of 10, which would make the correct spec 0.130" (1/8" = 0.125"), and ID of 0.740". By comparison, a standard box cutter blade is about 0.020" thick.

A:  I just bought one of these, and I measured the wire diameter at 0.105".

        Answer This Question

A:  It depends on the construction of the ladder and its weight. Please contact the manufacturer, or review the installation instructions, for their recommendations for replacement parts.

Q:Do you have the k value for this spring?
          by|Oct 17, 2016

          Answer This Question

A:  I have this spring. Based on some information measurements in my garage with lifting weights, the k appears to be in the range of about -750 N/m above approx 10 lbs. I had no way to determine initial tension, but a 3.3lb weight hung produced no displacement (light between coils). At 15 lb I saw about 2.8 inches displacement, at 20lb a little under 5 inches displacement, and at 25lb about 5.8 inches displacement. Interpolating these values shows an intercept around 10lb, so I assume that's the initial tension. Safe working load is listed as 35 lb so I didn't test above 25lb. Hope this helps - sorry, I don't have an Instron.

I used two of these to replace the springs on my attic ladder. I have no idea who the ladder's manufacturer is, which seems to be necessary information for obtaining exact replacement parts. These springs were an acceptable replacement, measuring 2 inches shorter, and slightly smaller wire diameter. They have slightly less tension than the original ones, but do hold the ladder up when closed.
