Is there a way to configure this for an 84" wide closet? I am having a hard time figuring that out. It seems that all of the sections are even numbered width, so I am not sure.

What is the installed depth without the rod attached?
shelves are 12" deep. The rod does not go out past the end of the shelf so does not affect this dimension.

You can. The cut won't be very smooth so make sure you use the rubber end caps on the rough cut shelving ends.
