Questions & Answers

How do you keep rodents out?

Asked by: lcb
Before putting down the composter, I place on the soil, a layer of small grid wire mesh. Failure to do this means moles and rats will burrow from underneath and eat all the good stuff before it can become compost.

is this compost bin suitable for grass clippings and leaves?

I did not purchase it yet, I am waiting for an answer first.
Asked by: needananswer1
As long as you haven't treated your grass and leaves with harmful chemicals, it would be okay to put them in. You wouldn't want to throw compost in your vegetable garden with chemicals not made to be ingested, for example.

Customer Reviews

82 gal. Enviro World Compost Bin is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 125.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Composter I was looking for a one piece composter with no moving or metal parts and this composter fills the bill. It is big and would take forever to fill with only kitchen waste. It will take several months to get into a good compost cycle. If your primary composting goal is kitchen waste get something smaller. This composter has no bottom. That means eventually the soil and composter will become one unit with worms and soil bacteria migrating in. It also means I needed to ensure the composter was well located to prevent rodents from entering, not that they would be a big problem. The hold down stakes were criticized in other reviews, but they are adequate if you tap them down gently and have no rocks where they need to go. They are a square section twisted so they naturally rotate when tapped down, need to plan for this when you start. This will give them a little increased holding power over smooth pegs. Not likely to be bear proof however!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple to Use This compost bin doesn't need any kind of complicated assembly. I thought I wanted a rotating bin, but after reading reviews of them that talked about how hard they were to assemble, parts wearing out, and holes in them attracting lots of flies, I changed my mind when I read reviews of this bin. The bin is large and barely fit in my husband's car when we picked it up from Home Depot, so it would be best to use as SUV or truck to bring it home, but beyond that we have had no problems. The lid fits securely so no animals can get in it, and the bin sits unobtrusively in a corner of our yard. Every week we use a pitchfork to turn the compost, and we use a hose to add some water, and it all seems to be working as it should. We have not had it long enough to use the composted material in the garden yet, but are looking forward to doing so!

Within 2 weeks rats had chewed through the lowering vents. I covered the vents wire screen and so far so good. Also, do not put meat or fish material into the bin as they act like a magnet for rodents.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good compost bin Very much what you'd expect from a big plastic top loading compost bin. Sturdy with good vent slots on the sides, twist on lid and stakes to secure it to the ground. The lid can get hard to twist if it's muddy, but that's to be expected. Stakes are flimsy, but I haven't had any problems with the bin wanting to tip or lift up. I've found an abundance of worms making their way into the top layers of compost, which is nice. The compost mix takes some muscle to turn, which is typical for this type of bin. Overall a great bin at a reasonable price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, simple to use, compost bin! Great price and simple to use! The bin is made of sturdy plastic and has a very large capacity. The door at the base means that we can harvest some compost while still adding in new material at the top. Our previous compost pile was open and lured raccoons into the area. We added a floor of 1/2 inch hardware cloth and also wrapped a strip of hardware cloth across the larger vents toward the bottom of the bin. The hardware cloth was tied to the vents with wire to secure it. With hungry raccoon in the area, we wanted to prevent them from chewing through the larger vent areas to get a snack. So far nothing as attempted to get into the bin and the bin is composting much faster than any open system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Large Compost Bin Bought this for my daughters birthday, yes, her birthday! lol Comes with lid and door in front to easily remove compost from the bottom without lifting the whole bin. I have had one like this in my back yard for at least 10 years. Now she can put her kitchen compostables and garden clippings in. Bin is quite large and comes with stakes to hold it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This product is remarkably simple. It is essentially an empty, sturdy plastic shell that you can put either on the ground or over a wire mesh (if you are worried about rodents intruding). The bin (which is entirely open on the bottom) attaches to the ground with four simple tent stakes. In the front is a door which slides up and from which you can collect dirt after the composter has done it's thing. The lid on the top is sturdy and secures well to the body of the compost bin. We were set up and composting in minutes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Our Composter This compost bin was online-only. That made me very nervous to buy. However, it came in quickly, and the quality was far superior to what I was I anticipating. We set it up the day we got it, add to it daily and it is GREAT. I would highly recommend it to the novice or highly experienced composter. :) It is wonderful.
