Q:How does this operate

Answer This Question

A:  You push the tool down into your compost, and the blades fold up. When you pull the tool up and out, the blades fold down, which pulls the bottom material up to the top.

A:  Supposedly you push it into the compost pile and as you pull up the wings unfold due to material pulling them down. There is no battery. We did not think it really worked very well but perhaps it was operator error - a pitchfork did a better job for us. It is well constructed.

A:  It is manually operated. You push it down into your compost and the little stainless "wings" fold up against the green shaft. When you pull up on it, the "wings" unfold, pulling the compost from the bottom to the top of the pile. I found it very effective. I would rate it as highly durable. The shaft is painted steel and the "wings" are stainless steel. If anything was going to fail, it would be the pivot and this could be easily repaired with a bolt and nut. But given the small load experienced by this pivot, I don't see it failing.

A:  Its a piece of junk! Its states that its made out of metal but when you get it its made out of aluminum. Aluminum is too soft to turn the compost so it bends making this item useless. Save your money and use a pitchfork.

A couple of flaws but overall it's functional
The design is a good one, with one exception. It should have a T handle for 2 handed use. The two blades fold up to allow the thing to go into the compost easily, then fold back out when you pull the unit up out of the compost. If it had a T handle, I would give it 4 stars. The construction is a bit iffy. The blades are held on by rivets, which I could see breaking in the future. I am considering drilling them out and replacing them with bolts.

I am disappointed with this product. It is very difficult to use. I don't have enough strength to really get down and churn the compost. I have a barrel bin. More frustrating is that the compost frequently clogs up the little "arms" and they stay closed. I have to physically clean out the compost often while I am using the tool.

I’ve used this garden fork about 10 times so far and have been pleased with the turning power. Before I was using a shovel and couldn’t get down to the bottom of the bin very easily. With the help of this tool, I can pull up the material on the bottom to aerate the pile. I do wish the wings where a little bigger to allow more material to be moved around.

          Works well, long lasting
I bought this exact one over 20 years ago. So it is durable. The rivet holding the wings just broke off today. However I think I can just replace the rivet and I'll be good for another 20 years. It does require effort to use.
