I would use at least 1 3/4 inch as for how many you need would be about 140-150. But remember if you are putting a new layer over the old some manufacturers won't warranty the new shingles and if they do it's usually at a reduced life.

approximant count in 5 pound box?

Answer

Using my handy-dandy calculator, I am going to say approximately 760 pieces. (A 50 pound box has 7,600 pieces, so a 5 pound box would have 1/10 as many. This is just a guesstimate!

I used these nails when installing a ridge vent/ridge cap on my shed.
I needed the longer nails so they would pierce both the ridge cap and decking. They worked great and have held the ridge vent down for four years. No issues with these nails.
