A: These caps perform best holding down or securing tar paper or house wrap , and or even synthetic underpayment. They can be used to secure tarps as well though I would recommend a longer spike. The cap can become weathered and brittle over time if exposed to the elements

A: They could but I would not recommend it. The plastic degrades when exposed to sunlight and the elements, leaving you with just the nail after about a year. Additionally, they stick up enough that they would allow bugs, etc, to nest easily under the shingle.
