Q:How do you trim out the top? The mounting kit seems more suited for the bottom with concrete screws. Also, at $20 each, that's a bit pricey to use at the top.

Nice clean look, but not 5 inches
I used these columns to replace identical looking wood columns on my porch, which had rotted so badly there was a danger of structural failure. The idea of a column that I would not have to paint and wouldn't rot was appealing. First, as many other reviews have pointed out these columns are not 5 x 5, they are 4 x 4. I do not understand the discrepancy, I think it has something to do with the fact that nominal wood boards have a reduced size compared their measurements but makes no sense for a molded synthetic column. In any case, the columns give a nice clean look. There is some significant column to column variability in design, but it's not noticeable unless they are right next to each other. There were also some minor scratches from the posts being moved around/delivery but they buffed out. Install was simple, though I do agree with others that the metal support pole is not directly in the center of the post, but that did not have much of an effect on the bracket placement once we started working. Cutting the posts (and they must be cut because the metal pole hangs out both ends) is a pain in the butt using a hacksaw as recommended. I used a deep cut portable band saw to do the job. I do recommend buying the optimal molding kit as it gives a nice look. I attached railings, which requires screws that pierce the inner metal pole (according to the post installation instructions). I achieved this by using self-drilling metal screws. Overall I recommend the posts, a bit more effort for installation is better than having to continually paint to protect against rot.

I purchased 4 posts advertised as 5x5 inches when in reality they measure just a tick over 4 inches. I have not been able to find post skirts to fit because 5 inches are too big and 4 inches are too small. Even the post wraps recommend for the post do not fit properly according to reviews left about them. I called home depot for advice which was useless. The woman was obviously annoyed and shouldn't be working a job requiring people skills or knowledge of what they sell because she had neither. There is also the problem that there are bad places on the exterior post were they clumped and bubbled during the molding process. I guess I will have to see if they make custom post skirts to get some that fit because this brand has really messed up measurements.

Metal pole inside does all the support
Was surprised after trimming the bottom of the post to discover the majority of this post is a very soft foam. See photo. So you just have to be careful to make sure the pole in the middle makes solid contact with your roof and floor, otherwise the plastic will surely buckle if it ends up carrying any weight. I trimmed back the plastic and foam about 1/4 inch top and bottom to ensure this and ended up caulking the resulting gap.

The instructions to install these posts demand you to use a plumb and center the mounts. Impossible to center them because the internal pipe is misaligned in the casting. (See the attached picture) I did not see that before buying it. I went back and all the posts had misaligned pipes. I will return it!

Strong- looks nice- can’t be painted
The information on this post says it can be painted- well maybe if u have some special plastic paint and a chemical called Trich (trichlorethane) to prep the material, it’s plastic and u can’t get Trich anymore in Canada because it causes cancer- anyway the post has a solid pipe inside that u can drill and put a bolt through it to install a bracket- as other reviews have mentioned- the pipe is not centered inside the plastic- so be aware of that when u drill The post looks nice and is strong, I suggest u try to keep it an 1/8” off the ground to allow water to run off as the pipe is steel, so 30 years might be an issue if u don’t
