Questions & Answers

Why is there so much variance in the depth of the rabbit cut? It is imaged as though it is 0.25" or so, but it is spec-ed at 0.22", questioners seem to indicate 0.22 to 0.25" and mine varied from 0.18" to 0.20" and I needed 0.22 as an absolute minimum.

Is the rabbit .22 or .25 inch

Answer This Question

There seems to be a very wide variety in measurements. Mine was only 0.18" deep. My glass is 0.10" and the matting and backing were both 0.05". IOW, the stack is 0.02" deeper than what the frame accommodates, not even counting the framing diamonds.

By|May 1, 2024

The rabbet on mine is .39 inches deep and .22 inches wide.

    By|Sep 25, 2022

I measured in 3 places it came to .23+ in all 3 locations

      By|Sep 23, 2022

        .25 is what mine measured.

Have remover large mirror from bathroom, would like to frame and hang elsewhere in house, will this moulding work on this project/ IF no what kind of moulding do I need? Thanks

Hi KimH, thank you for your inquiry. Yes you can use this moulding to trim your mirror.

          By|Apr 25, 2019

it will work to frame around the mirror but I would mount the mirror to the wall first and then run frame around it. Not alot of material to hold the large heavy mirror in frame, much safer to put frame around after hung mirror on wall

if your mirror is less than 1/4 inch thick, this molding will work. Cut @45 degrees very accurately, sand cuts lightly and apply white glue to both surfaces, clamp with molding clamps. When glue is set, remove from clamps and drive 1 inch brads, both ways, at each corner.

                (3)

yes. This moulding will be fine except you have to make sure that both the framing and the hanging are secure enough for the weight of the mirror.

                By|Apr 7, 2019

It will work; so would many others. There are plenty of DIY hints online if you search for "frame mirror with trim" on a popular search engine. Good luck.

                  By|Apr 6, 2019

Do not trust the frame to hold up the mirror. Use the original mirror mountings and glue the frame pieces to the mirror edges. Use a luan plywood back if necessary. Add angle plates to the corners for stability.

I think it can work, depends how thick the mirror is

approx 3/16-inches. I cut molding so that frame opening would be 3/16-inches smaller than picture mat. This provided a 3/32-inches overlap around the edge of the picture mat.

                                      Decent frame material
The wood is straight and nice grain. However after making two picture frames from two different pieces I will say that bass wood is hard to stain.

I am a semi professional picture framer, and this moulding is all I use. Can stain it any color I want and it always looks great. Cuts very easy and assembles effortlessly. Much easier to work with than other hardwoods like oak and ash. Highly recommended!

Nice looking molding. Got to the store early and didn't have to wait in line. The back is not flat so I had to hold it firmly to keep it from wobbling while I hand sawed. It works best if you cut one side of a corner and work your way around. It has no discernible grain, so is easy to cut a small sliver off. Had a couple of tiny hard black spots but paint covered it. I learned that the miter box is taller on one side than the other. I flipped the miter box to cut the second piece for the same corner and the pieces did not fit together right, so had to re-cut it on the other side of the miter box. The results look good.

                                          Nice Alternative to Custom Frame
You can build your own picture frame. You'll need a mitre box to cut 45 degree corners and corner clamp to hold it while you glue it together. I took off one star because it was just a little curved. I was attaching it to a rectangular chalkboard, so it didn't affect my final product. For reference the smaller chalkboard in the picture has the same wood frame as the larger one without the added moulding.
