Trying to hang a 8ft foot lithonia light in garage # snap toggle and size would u recommend. weight limit x # of toggle?

My original plan was to use the power box to anchor the fixture but i seem to have metal ceiling joist behind the drywall so the box is not sturdy wnough to support the light fixture. I also was planning on using spring toggles but see these as easier to install and remove if necessary without losing the toggle
Asked by: HandyManny
Yes they would work in Sheetrock, but I would still like to use the rafters with screws instead. Depends on the weight if the fixture, 3/16" toggle straps should work.

Does the Weight rating increase with more toggles?

I'm needing to mount a 40 lb shelf unit 7 feet up on a wall. Once I get the books etc on the shelf, I expect the total weight to be 150-200 lbs. The 1/4 20 toggles are rated for just 80 lbs. What if I use 9 toggles to mount the shelving unit. Is my 200 lbs divided by the 9 toggles? In other words each of the nine toggles would be supporting around 22 lbs each. The top row might have a little more of the shear weight on them. Are the any issues with my application or approach? Thank you
Asked by: TwoHandsOneHammer
Yes if you spread the total weight evenly across the shelving unit you can add the weight capacity of each anchor used. If you are concerned with the top row then I would make sure I had at least three toggles supporting the top row. (240 lbs of weight support. If you can add a fourth for additional strength, that would be a better solution.

Customer Reviews

1/4 in. x 2-1/2 in. Toggle Straps with Screws (6-Pack) is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 117.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Forget These, Probablly All Hillman Products Bought some of these because what I usually use was out of stock. Pure junk, read the other reviews. Straps don't retain when you seat them, and the retainer falls off behind the wall. Its unbelievable these are actually on the market, and they haven't been litigated because of them. Its clear they've never tested them except in a lab environment. If you have them in quantity, try this to save as many as possible. DO NOT hold any more pressure against them than necessary to get the retainer to seat. Seating the retainer is very directional, make sure your fingers are on the load part of the retainer. After you seat them, DO NOT bend the plastic arms to break them off; they are so cheap they come out of the retainer. Instead of breaking them off like quality toggles, cut them off with a small side cut. Then hope when you try and run the bolt it doesn't knock the straps off until you get it started. Good luck. Never buy this stuff without reading the online reviews.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifesavers After hours of wasted effort pursuing other options I used these anchors to install a pedestal sink to a tiled wall when the blocking didn't align with the mounting holes.. If you're having trouble finding an anchor that really holds strong these are the ticket, forget the traditional toggles with their huge entry holes and chintzy bolts.. I think as long as you handle the plastic parts in a gingerly manner and make sure the toggle is properly aligned you shouldn't have problems- I did notice that the plastic seemed brittle but I removed and reinserted one toggle a few times and it didn't snap like some of the other reviewers mentioned. I love the beefy 1/4" 20 bolts that can be swapped out for longer hex heads for torquing down the mount in confined spaces (like the underside of a pedestal sink) Highly recommended for anything too heavy and important for plastic expanders or traditional toggles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Once a great product now garbage I'm a license contractor in California. I have used this product for many years. They are great for hanging TVs among other things. Some time in the near past the quality changed. Every part that comes with the toggle straps is cheaper; even the bag they come in. I'm guessing the manufacture, Hillman, is sacrificing quality for profit. They are now so cheaply made that when you insert the bolt the back of the toggle bolt falls off in the wall. I highly recommend a similar product made by Hilti. The Hilti's cost more and they work. The Hilti's are with the couple extra bucks. Do not waste your money on the Hillman product, pure garbage. If Home Depot values their customers, they should drop this product line.

I was trying to use them in a cement block wall and the cavities were not perpendicular enough in some of the locations so the threads were at an angle and I couldn't get the screws started without cross threading them. Also the plastic tie portion seamed to brittle and I broke several of them when I tightened them to the wall.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Idea, Poor Quality Product I’ve been a contractor/installer for more than 30 years. I’ve used just about every wall anchor made. This toggler type product is a great idea, however this particular brand of this wall anchor is cheap! Priced pretty high at $1.37 each, I realized a high failure rate (2 of 6) increased the actual cost to over $2 an anchor. I do not recommend this particular brand

All you have to do is find out where you want to mount your tv, then drill your 1/2" hole, insert the the toggle strap, line it up, pull the ring and you have an anchor ready to go. They work just fine for most jobs requiring a lot of support.

I went back to hollow wall anchors for the other 3. The video I watched which recommended these made it look easy. Maybe I did it wrong? Good luck. ..

It makes it difficult to position the metal anchor and pull it towards the screw without the anchor just dropping behind the wall. I used all 6 straps to result it 2 anchored bolts.
