This item has been out of stock for quite a long time. Do you know when it will be available again?

Asked by Al October 26, 2020

Answer

Home Depot does special purchases and seasonal buy-ins for certain products by category. This may have been a promo item where they did a blanket order for all their stores or for a particular region. They may do it again at a future date with either the same product or a similar product either from this manufactureer or another. In the future if you see it as a bulk item like in a seasonal promotional area you should buy whatever quantity you anticipate needing as it may be a one time purchase.

If I want to have the bottom shelf 2 feet or so above ground level, will the unit lack stability?

Any time you create a scenario where a shelf might be top heavy, you risk stabilizing.

Are casters available that can be attached to these shelves? Are the shelf supports such that casters can be added?

Shelf comes with hard plastic post feet. Not aware of casters that can be attached. But I use different sizes of treated wood in garage that are chiseled out a bit to rest bottom of posts in to get posts off ground and to level shelving unit.

How much does it weight in the box before assembling

The 4 foot version found at most Depots is manageable for one average guy using flat cart or dolly. But the 5 foot version must be ordered and box is heavy requiring two people.

I don’t understand the difference except it’s not a stock item and the more expensive unit is available at selection locations. I ordered the less expensive unit and waited a couple of weeks for delivery. Unfortunately HD rejected delivery due to damaged package. The next unit was shipped directly to my home but the package was also damaged (same one HD rejected?) but parts were ok. I’ve since ordered another one but it’s also taking over two weeks for delivery!?

Pretty much anything can be bolted to the wall. It is heavy so you would need heavy weight anchors and bolts. Depending on how much stuff will occupy the shelves, it might be to heavy.

What is the best method to secure these to the wall? The way in the inst. only works if your studs are directly behind.

If the studs don't line up with the rear uprights then use plumbers tape to loop around the uprights and go to the studs. Either to the outer portion of the shelving , or come in towards the studs behind the shelf unit.

Is the finish on this smooth, or sort of rough?

Very sturdy and easy to put together. Put it in my sewing room to hold totes full of material and batting.

Shelf unit is sturdy based on weight rating and price, but beams/braces don't stay secured to posts and shelves loose, so must secure them to posts using strong cable ties purchased separately (so with these ties I gave a 4 rating). Shelf can fall apart if moved or picked up to relocate if cable ties not used. Also support hooks don't reliably stay secured holding wire shelves to beams and often just fall off. Manufacturer needs to re-engineer all these assembly connections to make them more secure and reliable. Also need better secured post caps as these are cheap and easily fall off when knocked.

The space that I had available for the shelf was 64". Most shelving I saw was 48" or 72" wide. This was the only unit in any brand I searched for that was 60" wide (and 78" high). The reviews were mostly positive (with the exception of the person who stored snow melt on every shelf and the unit collapsed.) However, standard boxes and tools and holiday decorations and the normal Hodge podge of stuff one collects and stores in the garage all fit perfectly and happily on the 5 shelves (another plus as most o the shelving units only had 4 shelves). Very easy installation especially with wife holding ends.

We purchased 4 of these units and they failed as soon as we put anything on them. The long support rails are so flimsy they bend and the wire shelf falls. Some of them fell immediately when an item was placed on them, others were discovered later with multiple shelves that had fallen. This was not an issue of overloading the unit since the most on any one shelf was less than 150 pounds. This is a poor design. The units were disassembled and replaced with a better designed unit.

I picked up 3 from The Home Depot on Staten Island #1249. (The staff was very helpful) The shelving unit was easy to assemble and was reasonably priced. The problem i had with the unit, is its load capacity. Although it says 5,000lbs, *when evenly distributed, and 1,000lbs per shelf, mine failed at 200lbs when trying to load salt to store for next winter. This happened on 2 shelves and was incredibly disappointing. That's 8 50lbs bags of salt
