Q:Is ABS pipe safe for hydroponics?
by|Oct 2, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hi, KP03 - We're not hydroponic experts so it's always best to check with those who know best. Doing an on-line scan of the subject, we saw many articles indicating both ABS and PVC are safe for use with hydroponics. Here's an excerpt from one such site: "ABS is one of the safest materials for hydroponics. This material will not release any harmful chemicals into your plants’ water supply, which makes it ideal if you are growing edibles or medicinal herbs indoors. The downside to ABS is that it’s more expensive than PVC. It also doesn’t have as many different styles and sizes available. It’s considered one of the safe plastics to use as it won’t contaminate your nutrient solution or reservoir container with harmful chemicals."

    Answer This Question

A:  Good question. Cost for a couple of 2 ft. sections is about the same as a 10 ft. length.

A:  Hi, Skip - There has been a tremendous increase in raw material resins over the past year or so. VPC keeps its costs to Home Depot as low as possible but Home Depot is ultimately responsible for the retail prices they charge. HD is generally the low-price leader in the retail marketplace, so you should see similar prices at competitive retailers.

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Frank - Depending on your location, there should be 4" x 10' sticks of ABS available at your local Home Depot store. It might not be from VPC but most stores carry ABS foam core (and sometimes solid core) at their stores.

If you need a piece of 3" ABS 2' long or less this is the one for you. You can glue this into your drain system a forget about it. It appears to only be available in black but that is not a problem for me at least since the rest of my drain is also black. An ABS cement is recommended for use with this product. A combination PVC/ABS cement can also be used. The combination cement is higher priced but if you have trouble differentiating between the two types go with the combination cement.

I spent $18.00 on 24inches of plastic pipe. That price is insane. Work on your pricing please. I feel robbed.
