Q:Is there something I can mix with this in order to make it suitable for fruits and vegetables and outdoor gardening
      by|Jan 23, 2024
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Our Palm, Cactus & Citrus Mix is ready to use right out of the bag. It is a well draining mix that citrus fruits require. Some vegetables may require more water retention that you can add an organic potting mix to help with that.

          Mushrooms Growing
I bought few bags of this cactus soil for my potted palm plants, snake plants, and plumerias, but a lot of mushrooms growing around my plants. I had to throw out the soil. I just wasted my money on this product. I will be returning the other unopened bags that I bought. I don't think I will be buying this brand again.

Mushrooms thrive in damp organic matter. They will not harm plants as they can only live on decaying organic matter. When mushrooms appear, it's usually a sign to reduce watering. Let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry before watering again. The mushrooms will disappear once the surface area of the soil dries out. KelloggGardenProducts

              Mold
I think there might a bad batch because I didn’t have this issue in the previous bags I purchased. This past week I bought 7 bags of which I used 3 only. A week later there is mold at the top of both containers. I read another review of someone complaining about mold in their bag recently. I sent an email to the company to see if there is an ongoing issue and remediation but in the meantime I will return the last 4 unopened bags. It’s unfortunate because I would like to keep using this brand.

If you find what looks like white or gray mold inside a newly opened bag of organic soil, don’t be alarmed. It’s actually a good thing! It proves there is life in the soil. Much of the success of your plants depends on the health of the microbial community in the soil they’re planted. During the composting process, we encourage the growth of some beneficial microbial species in our soils. Some of these species are fungi, they help your plants by eating any decaying organic matter and making the nutrients in it available for plants. The white or gray “mold” is a Saprophyte, which is what is naturally found on the forest floor. They play an important part in the ongoing process of decomposition of organic matter – just like in the forest. The presence of saprophytes is an indication of plenty of nutrients which help aid in pest and disease resistance and healthy plant growth. When the moisture content inside a bag of soil becomes higher than normal – perhaps due to a few days of rain – these fungi will gather around the inside layer of the bag. It is not harmful to humans or plants. Once the bag is opened and the soil contents are exposed to sun and air, the saprophytes will disappear. KelloggGardenProducts

Great soil. Good price for a good amount of product. Has perlite in it which I like but Compacts over time so do not water very often as time goes by it will not dry out below a few inches and will cause over watering and root rot. Use perlite to help drainage and root growth

Mix has changed for the worse
Mix now has zero sand and 5-10% of pumice it used to. Basically a mulch, shredded wood. Terrible. Had to return. Had used this mix for several years — was excellent for outdoor containers of cacti — no more. Over last month I have had to return all.
