for 20 cents more per cover plate, its worth it especially with tenants or section 8 housing where cracked plates will cause a unit to fail.
Cover plates are very easy to break if you just turn the screw just one half a turn more than needed. These nylon plates are more flexible and CAN break but its rare. You must've really messed up if you made one break. You just want it tight enough so that the screw doesn't fall out, but not so tight that from far away you can tell the plate is warped!
These make a new unit look so much better. It's a basic product, but it makes the room look newer. no one wants to see a face plate thats been painted over 3x :)
Older outlets break a lot. A new coverplate is less brittle and helps protect the outlet esp when kids are around which can be dangerous. The attached picture shows the 3 outlets I replaced in an older rental. So much safer for their kids
