Q:Can these be dry set in sand?
by|Mar 24, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Yes, this travertine tile can be dry set-in sand, commonly referred to as a "sand-set" installation. This method involves laying the tiles directly on a compacted sand bed without the use of mortar or grout. It's important to ensure that the sand bed is properly prepared, compacted, and leveled to provide a stable base for the tiles. However, we always recommend consulting with a professional installer when seeking personalized guidance on the sustainability of materials in a specific application. Q:The answers say yes can use for showers, yes can use outdoor, but no can't use around a pool. Why? What makes these not good for a pool deck?
    by|Jan 12, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Indeed, the travertine tile is a versatile choice for showers and outdoor spaces. However, it is not advisable for pool deck use due to its semi-vitreous nature, indicating a water absorption level between 3% and 7%, making it more suitable for indoor applications. Wonderful!
I used these tiles for my kitchen, and am seriously impressed with the results. Don’t be concerned with the folks who complain about the occasional tile with imperfections. If they were too dark, I simply didn’t use them. The small holes in others actually added to the charm. I do all of my own tiling, and had very little waste.

                  total garbage
This stuff is literally crumbling away beneth our feet. Every single tile has holes in it after one year of walking on it in our socks. Its so sensitive to chemicals that if you spill wine or toilet cleaner, it will leave a stain or dull spot. We put in 600 sq feet and two years later we are removing all of it to go with marble. $6000 literally tossed in the garbage. Do not buy this stuff for flooring

                    Great Old-World Rustic Look
We used these in our kitchen and we enjoy the old-world look they give. With under-cabinet lights, they give nice shadow effects (due to rough surfaces & imperfections). Since they're individual tiles, they were easy to work with for placement. They cut easily using my Skil wet saw, I used Mapei pre-mix mortar and Mapei premix grout in Bone color -- they made the job much easier. I also added some "flair" with listelle around the vent hood -- that took more time, but was worth it! See photos. I sealed them with 511 sealer-enhancer (2 coats) before grouting, and I think that helped with easy grout removal from the surfaces (during grout install). One jug of that was WAY more than I needed. Note: I did have some with HUGE imperfections and a few were cracked. So, I recommend you lay out each of your areas on the floor first: pick the best tiles from the bunch and arrange the color variation to be randomly distributed. They're so cheap, I didn't mind having a few broken ones.

This product was selected to match a project left incomplete by the prior homeowner. It matched perfectly, was easy to work with and the natural color variation has added life to our wall. We are very happy with the product.
