Cuts and trims branches good. But tool leaks oil.
I've had the m12 hatchet for about a year now, got it when it first came out. It does cut and trim branches from 3 - 6" easily. Tool is lightweight and easy to use. Unfortunately the tool leaks oil when being stored. After about 10 months, I decided to see if I could get it fixed by Milwaukee. I sent it in for repair and they replaced a "worn" outlet tube. After receiving it, I placed it on a carboard box overnight to see if it would still leak. And sure enough there was still a puddle of oil underneath the hatchet / oil reservoir area. See attached images. If you don't mind the oil leaking, then this tool will be good for you. Otherwise, I couldn't recommend it. If the tool didn't leak, I'd rate it 5 stars. But since it does, even after repair, I'd rate it a 3. I read other reviews and there's quite a few other people that have experience their hatchet leaking oil, too.

This is a great tool for doing yard cleanups and tree trimming. I like that it doesn’t take up a bunch of space but has loads of power.

    Best Landscaping Tool!!
I purchased this pruning saw to see if it performs overall better than my M18 FUEL Hackzall with pruning blades. I own a few different size chainsaws but sometimes they are overkill for pruning or limbing up trees. I was using my FUEL Hackzall with Milwaukee pruning blades (48-00-1304), but the reciprocating motion can sometimes damage vegetation that I am working on. This pruning hatchet comes with a 6” bar and weighs about 5.0 lbs without a battery. With a XC4.0 battery it weights about 5.5 lbs. Considering I usually run a 6.0 High Output battery on my Hackzall, the pruning hatchet is overall lighter. It is well balanced and comfortable in the hands. I have read lots of reviews about how the safety is hard to engage while trying to trigger the saw. I have worked in construction for many years, and I am not sure if it’s just me, but I always use my middle finger on my left or right, to trigger tools. Impact, drills, Hackzall, you name it I always use my middle finger. So engaging the safety is easy for me. But the safety is designed so that it can be engaged on either side of the tool with your thumb, making it for left or right handed use. The grip is designed so that you can apply pressure and/or maintain good control with your non-trigger hand on the top of the saw. Overall design of the tool is well thought out. The saw has no issues cutting branches up to 3”. It is not designed to go bigger than that for safety reasons. I spent some years as a wild land fire fighter and have dropped my fair share of trees, this tool is not designed to handle bigger cuts so be mindful of that. I read a lot of reviews on oil leaking issues, but I have not had this problem. My end conclusion is that this pruning hatchet beats using a hackzall for pruning and limbing. Make sure to always clean the saw after every use, I use a compressor to clean it out. Make sure you always have bar oil with you when running the tool. Overall very happy with this tool.

The saw has no issues cutting branches up to 3” so I wanted to put it to the test on bigger diameters. I cut up to 5.25” without any issues. I even cut a branch that was 7”, had to make two separate cuts and it was really easy. If you plan on cutting over 3” branches, I personally would use a chain saw, but for smaller size branches, this tool works really well and does a phenomenal job. I read a lot of reviews on oil leaking issues, but I have not had this problem. My end conclusion is that this pruning hatchet beats using a hackzall for pruning and limbing. I would limit the diameter to under 4” for this tool, but it can easily handle more. Make sure to always clean the saw after every use, I use a compressor to clean it out. This Hatchet has been incredible right out of the box! I haven't had any issues with it and have put it to work immediately. Batteries last surprisingly long, and the chain is still sharp! Looking forward to buying more of lawn and garden tools!

Great while it lasted. 3 uses and it died.
As a female this tool fit my scale and drastically scaled the speed and capabilities of pruning jobs. It was used for two different projects taking off branches and removing weed trees. It’s battery is tricky to get out, and the safety trigger is a bit awkward. It was easy to fill with oil. It cut through live and dead wood with ease. Then on the third project it stopped working. I’ve had it less then a month. The light in the side of the saw shows solid red when you pull the trigger. It clicks and makes a little whir sound. Nothing moves or functions. When the battery is in the charger it shows solid green. It’s never been used on wood more then 4” thick and as mentioned, only 3 small pruning projects.

I love my Milwaukee Hatchet Pruning saw. This thing is a beast. It cut's anything I ask it cut... including fireplace kindling, shrub trunks, medium size trees, landscape timbers and more. I have seen some reviews mention that the safety+trigger is hard to activate with one hand. While I do see what they mean... I personally do not find it inhibitive. I have medium size hands and have no problem activating the tool with one hand. The saw is powerful and lightweight... super useful for small to medium yard projects. In the picture below, the saw easily cut through a very solid piece of firewood that is 6" at the thickest point.

                      Perfect For Small Jobs
This saw is great! I used it to trim up some trees in my yard and had no issues using it. It small and compact and is easier to carry around compared to a regular chainsaw. It will definitely cut through thicker wood than it claims but I wouldn't recommend doing it. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

No lack of power, easy one-handed operation, and excellent battery life with the RedLithium 4.0 and 6.0 XC batteries. Large ejection port makes clog free cutting and easy clean-up with an air compressor.

                          Exceed expectations
This saw is more than expected, it is very powerful, well balanced, light weight, ergonomic, and just a great little package. I did get this for home use and had to use it to remove a hedge, and it performed great. So I took it to work to show the guys and try it out there. I am a troubleman at a power utility so I have plenty of jobs for the hatchet. So right away we had an outage had to cut a bunch of brush and bushes. Than I took it up in the air to clear palms, was excellent. Later in the week had a storm roll through and had to cut the broken cross arms from the top of a power pole, did it with ease much safer and had much more control than a regular chainsaw. We currently are in the m18 platform at work and now we are considering getting into the m12 platform, this saw is helping that decision. What I do not care for, the safety but understand why. It would be nice if the safety was on top. Would also like to see a ring on the back of it so I could hang it from my bucket hook, not really the saws intention to be hanging from a bucket truck. Again great saw, definitely has a place at home and work.

I also have lots of trees on my property so it's nice to be able to trim the dead limbs by myself with no hassle. Best tool for me by far! Thank you Milwaukee.

Being the tool connoisseur that I am, I was instantly intrigued by the concept of the M12 Milwaukee Hatchet that it was a no brainer for me. Like all the other M12 tools, the Hatchet is made for serious work! Right out out of the box, just add chain oil to the reservoir, pop in a battery, and start cutting! Great for pruning where a full size chainsaw can't fit and saves time over a manual pruning saw. Very ergonomic and easy to handle. I'm looking forward to using it for years to come!

I had purchased this because I could not get little pawn shop found 34cc mighty mite to run. I decided since I just bought the m12 drill kits for the holiday that I would give the Fuel Hatchet a go. I have not used it a lot bit did cut some branches and limbs around the yard to try it out. I can easily say it out performed the small old 2 stroke chainsaw I have. The Hatchet cut through live and dead wood no issues. I like that when you release the trigger the chain slows quickly to a stop. I will say I have noticed it seems to leak the bar oil a little. Hard to say where from but best guess is it was what had ran out of it when cutting and it all collected in the bottom of the scabbard and drained out the back by the base of the bar. Kind of a con but it stays in my packout box now and is easily cleaned up. If you are on the fence go for it. You can pack this thing up on a utv and packout mount and take it camping for firewood or use it in the yard. Very versatile and easy to use.

Made quick work of a large branch!
I recently had shoulder surgery so when a large branch fell on our property, I knew I couldn’t cut it with my chainsaw. I bought this pruning saw after reading the reviews. I am not disappointed! The saw is great! Made quick work of the branch! The 4.0 battery gave it plenty of power and lasted through nearly the whole branch. The only drawback was that I needed to refill the chain oil reservoir often. (But the smaller reservoir keeps the weight down so I didn’t mind.) It paid for itself in one day!

Cuts well, could use some improving
This lost 2 stars from me mainly due to the ergonomics. It is not all that comfortable to use with one hand I found out about this right in time, I wanted to purchase a similar one for about a year and was going to finally cave in when I found out about this one. Since I am already invested heavily in the M12 lineup, runtime would never be an issue since I have batteries for days. I was also looking at a 10" chainsaw but decided not to get one since it did not have the tool free tensioning system. After buying this I reconsidered not getting the 10" chainsaw. As this did not have a tool free tensioning system either. Both were similar in price and where I live I pretty much have to get the chains and bars online as none of my local stores currently have them in stock. So if I need a bar or chains, I cannot simply go to the store and grab one it would take a few days to get one. I have several large chainsaws, but I mainly use them for cutting down branches and sometimes the 16" and 18" can be overkill so I wanted something smaller, that I can easily store in my vehicle. All in all this cut well. I was able to make quick work of downed branches from a post storm cleanup, and I was able to cut through pallet pieces easily to break them down. I used my 4.0 ah battery, I did not count the cuts. The window for the oil is clearly visible which is good. This has an onboard storage for the scrench. Having the scrench handy is also good for removing some of the gunk that forms inside from the oil mixed with the tree trimmings. I would like to see a few improvements for a Gen II model. Suggestions: The housing for the motor is a little wide so it does not make a one handed operation all that comfortable as I had to open my hand wider to press the start button and the trigger at the same time. I would reposition the button so it is closer to where your thumb would lie. I have big hands and I still had to stretch my fingers to start it with one hand .I am a righty so starting this and turning it on its side in a mater of 3 seconds to see the battery indicator is a hassle at times. I would move the indicator to the rear so you can see it as soon as you start the saw. It's 2020 everything has an LED, I would like to see on added to this also I found that this uses a lot of oil. When I get a Milwaukee tool my first question is which packout will I need. For this the small organizer is just a tad bit too small, so you would need one of the full size organizers. By full size, I mean width wise one like the 11 compartment organizer.

I received the Milwaukee 6" M12 fuel 12 volt lithium-ion brushless cordless hatchet pruning saw kit with 4.0 battery and charger. It's powerful, compact and lightweight which I like. I had a branch fall off a tree near my home and I used this tool to cut up the branch into smaller pieces to be able to move the debris. I started with a full charge and had no issues finishing the job. I have also used this tool to prune a crepe myrtle tree of it's lower branches which are about 3 inches in diameter and it did a great job on the pruning. I highly recommend this hatchet pruning saw.

Say hello to my little friend! This pruning saw made quick work taking down overgrowth on our cherry tree. 3, 4 and even 6 inch branches came down with little effort and the included battery lasted through the whole project on one charge. The small size lets me handle it with ease and also get into tight spots. The little oil reservoir was easy to fill with oil prior to the project and cleaning up the sawdust was easy with just a rag. Not having a cord was really convenient. Its just a really great little saw to have around for those projects where pruning shears won't do the trick but a full size chainsaw would be overkill. Very good quality from this company, and the easy availability and interchangeability of batteries gives me piece of mind.

The saw is light-weight and easy to handle. Push the button and then just hold down the grip. Because of its small size, the kickback was minimal, which is great because it is good for smaller branches that may require non-proper "chainsaw stance". I had always been afraid of chainsaws, so this little one helped me get over that fear...very easy to use. Getting the battery in the charger required a defn push. Initially, I couldnt believe that it didnt come with oil, since it only takes 1.7 oz, but after a short usage period (prob 20 min of start and stop), it had gone through half the oil...granted it was the first run, so maybe that accounts for it. Still, for the price, you'd think they could throw in some oil. I used canola from the kitchen; living in FL, cold-weather is not an issue, plus I am still locked-down, so I couldnt just run out and buy some. Anyhow, I have had good luck with Milwaukee products....I hope this continues that trend

Buy bar and chain oil, none included. Best tool for outside I've ever had! I never bought a chainsaw because I never felt I needed one. Besides I'm a little intimidated by the weight and danger surrounding them. This is perfect for my needs. Lightweight, cordless nice balance and super easy to use. I'm throwing away my bow saw. I will use this more than other tools I have. Big bonus, it's quiet!

The best small trimming saw available. Super powerful and easy to maneuver. Uses very little chain oil compared to another brand I have. Chain stays adjusted even after over 100 cuts. Battery after 50 cuts still shows full charge. Would be convenient to have a meter on the battery like some do. The safety switch to push before pulling the trigger is not the best. A better location would be great. The battery can be tough to extract at times. I sprayed mine with a silicone spray and now it is much easier. I highly recommend this well built quality saw
