If you do any plumbing you know Oatey - I use their products all the time. They are good solid products providing peace of mind that most homeowners take for granted. I picked this Oatey Centro Ii 1/2 In. Copper Sweat Washing Machine Outlet Box With Water Hammer Arrestor for a washing machine install I needed to do. Oatey makes these outlet boxes with the hammer arrestors in a variety of configurations. They make them for icemakers as well. If you have the foresight to install these during rough-in, these are a super easy install that really dresses up the appearance of a finished wall. This particular model is a little slimmer that ones I have used previously which I like. And there is a separate 1/4 turn shut-off for the hot and cold lines - which I also like - but Oatey does offer a model with a single shut-off that controls both hot and cold. This outlet box comes with a blue and red tab to mark the cold and hot water lines which allows the box to be oriented with supplies coming in from the top or the bottom. The hammer arrestors are nice and required by code in a lot of places.

It is a traditional laundry outlet box by Oatey with an air chamber feature or they call it a water hammer arrestor. The description page claims that valves can be installed with the arrestors upward or downward. I would do it with valves on the bottom, with the arrestors upward, just to make it fail safe. Valves have their positions as follows, pushed toward the wall - open, pulled towards the user - closed. Some may prefer the opposite positioning, but this is not really a concern because these valves are used rarely and mostly for maintenance once in ten years. Normally, air chambers are installed inside walls as a part of a rough piping, in these cases, they will only make water pressure changes even smoother. These boxes with arresters are essential if a hammering problem is present with pipes in the house, then they will make a huge difference to eliminate the problem.

Oatey Centro II 1/2 in. Copper Sweat Washing Machine Outlet Box with Water Hammer Arrestor is really pleasant upgrade. I personally think the product is mislabeled as a copper sweat it has mail ½ threads. I would not sweat the connections on this item because the box is PVC and heat travels quickly in metal and could damage the box. This is not a simple upgrade but you can make it simple if you plan accordingly. My pictures gives you an idea what I had to accomplish. I utilized Shark bite female quick connect to make the water connections. The contractor who built the house utilized CPVC and you would think would not make much noise as metal pipes however that is father from the truth. I am very pleased that I removed the old washing machine box and put this in. The valves started to leak and I would have had to replace the inner seats anyway. This Outlet box provided upgrade ball valves and peace and quiet. I would highly recommend this Washing Outlet if you desire to protect your plumbing.

This is an excellent washing machine outlet box. The plastic body of the box is thick. The brass valves are nice and come with ball valves to open and close. The outlet box comes with instructions which are mainly telling you how to punch out the hole for the drain valve. The decorative ring is nicely made and clips over the box to provide a finished look over rough wallboard edges. The box can be mounted to studs with molded-in brackets on the sides of the box. And optionally, it comes with these plastic stubs which extend how wide the box can be attached to a stud. Although installation of the box is relatively easy, I gave it a 4 because it does require soldering 1/2" copper pipes into the brass fittings or connecting with appropriate fittings for PEX tubing. It looks neat after installation. My expectations have been met.

More than just an outlet box for trimming where pipe stubs exit the wall and providing connections at convenient height; this clever device incorporates a valve station and provides suppression of annoying water hammer. Priorly, to get all these features, I had to subframe and box out a wall pocket, terminate piping to valves and hose fittings (or find faucet valves with correct orientation), tee-in suppressors and extend them above the high point. With this, however, Oatey has done all the procurement and assembly for me - in a compact arrangement no less. There are actually two features of more than apparent importance. (1.) Using the valves regularly extends the life of hoses connecting laundry equipment to the plumbing system. (2.) The shock suppressors dampen celerity waves (water hammer) that accompanies the rapidly cycling of solenoid valves in washing machines. That's another gain for equipment longevity. Photograph 1 shows that user connections and controls are compact and easily accessible. Photograph 2 shows that a number of sweat or threaded adaptions can be made. The sprues are long enough that soldering can be done, using caution, without affecting the plastic enclosure. The bottom port can be opened to the diameter best suited to the laundry drain hose. The molded polymer housing resists moisture - an attribute difficult to achieve in conventional frame construction. The trim ring provides a finishing touch. At four points, notches along its flange allow it to be set into the box at a depth matching the thickness of the wall finish. (See photograph 3.) To further ease installation, extension tabs reach well beyond the mounting ears. A series of pre-formed holes is bound to land on adjoining studs. See photograph 4 for general assembly. The return leg of those mounting tabs is adjustable within stirrups affixing them to the sides of the box. Their position also is set with ratcheting notches molded into their faces. (See photograph 5.) The added features of this box are shown on photograph 6. It also shows that in addition to flush mounting (as was the simpler box below) this box readily adapts to a wall that has been furred out. The lower box in the photograph was inverted to simplify its hook-up to a laundry sink. One should not do that with the shock suppressors. (Only a concern when plumbing drops from above as in a basement.) Looping the PEX piping is a simple matter - and that material also suppresses celerity waves. On the metallic piping serving appliances with quick-acting valves (dishwashers, washing machines) I built with large bore pipe and 3-way pipe hanging schemes. Still, updates with PEX and the addition of other Oatey suppressors has added reliability. This box makes it easy to provide all that up front.
