You need to cut an opening about 1/2 to 1 inch larger than the flap size. There is a paper template with the exact cut out dimenions

door cut out w"x h" ?
Asked by: slimjim
The specifications on this product are misleading if the door is 19" high. This site says 16". Frustrating. I am looking for a door to fit in storm door no taller than 17" high for opening.

This door has worked out well, but the instructions for installation were incorrect. There are plastic inserts that connect the inside and outside door frames. Cutting these plastic inserts to the correct width for your door is essential for a solid installation. The instructions said to cut the inserts to 'the width of the door' + 7/8". I did so, but it turned out that the assembly was then 1/4" too wide. Had I left it like this, the dog door would have sopped around inside the door, not fitting tightly. Fortunately, the plastic was too wide, so I cut it down to fit snugly. The instructions *should* have said to cut the plastic inserts to 'the width of the door' + 5/8". I don't know if the plastic has changed since the instructions were written. But be careful when assembling your door.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would not recommend In the past, I've bought two pet doors for sliding glass doors and one door with a pet door installed. All have been great. I bought this pet door from Home Depot as a custom order expecting it to be good quality and it is not. The flap is not sturdy so it doesn't fall back into place. The magnetic strip is not strong so that doesn't help with it tightly securing after the dogs go through. Also, it opens when the wind blows or I open the door. There are two gaps on each side of the flap. We adjusted the length by moving up and down but the width is too big for the door so it is causing small gaps. This is letting alot of hot or cold air in and rain. Do not buy this door unless it is inside and you do not care about letting hot and cold air in. There are many others to chose from around the same price. Also, it comes with a cheap cover. It does not lock or add any security to the door. I'm sorry I paid a professional to do this because I can't afford to do it again or I would take it back.

It is low enough for the Yorkie-poo to get through and yet high enough for my Greyhound to walk through without having to squat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Yorkies Love It Very pleased with this PetSafe plastic door. I have 2 yorkies less than 10 lbs each. They say the small door is the correct size. I think they are nuts. I bought the medium, up to 40 lb dog, which is the perfect size. I don’t think my dogs would use the smaller door. The box has a picture of a collie using this medium door. There is no way a collie can fit through this door. Buy the next bigger size than they say. I installed this door into my very cheap, back yard, storm door. The cut-out I framed with 1x2 furring strip for added support (on the inside) due to my flimsy storm door. Otherwise, every time the dogs would use the doggie door, it would wobble in & out from them pushing their heads into the flap. This is working out great. I just open my exterior house door, then the dogs go through the pet door, in the storm door, & out into the fenced in yard. For the first 2 days I taped the flap up so the dogs would get used to going in and out of this little doorway. They caught on quick. Then I dropped the flap down. One dog understood what to do as soon as I bumped her head against the flap a few times. The other dog took several bumps and a couple days. I did switch the screws with the size I needed. I don’t trust the plastic screws that come with the pet-door.

The trim panels need a very sharp and strong knife to trim to fit. The plastic screws that hold the two sides together are a challenge to get into the blind hole in the outside panel because the trim panels make it so you cannot see the hole in the outside panel. I've installed many doggie doors. Never had one that was so difficult to install. The plastic snap on cover will stop a dog or animals only. It could be easily kicked in by an intruder. The plastic screws are weak and can break easily. Anybody who thinks this is easy to install likely did not install the trim panels.
