Q:Is this Ryobi chainsaw single speed or variable? (either the 14" or 16")
by|Jan 15, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Dave - Neither this 16" 40V chainsaw nor the 14" 40V chainsaw has a variable speed trigger. When starting the chainsaw, squeeze the switch trigger and allow the chainsaw to get up to full speed before entering the cut. We hope this helps! Q:Ryobi has authorized to replace my 16 chainsaw because it was less than two years old when it broke. So far it has taken them over seven weeks to replace my saw. Why is this?

A:  Take it to your local Home Depot for and exchange or store credit. With receipt it would be easy, without a receipt you'll receive store credit.

            Chain won’t stay on.
I was so excited to get this. I used it 4 times. Each time I drove almost 2 hours each way to my camp for nothing. I could not get this chain to stay on longer than 3-5 mins. No matter how many times I take it apart clean it and adjust the screw. Most the time it falls off even before I can use it. Never had that issue with my gas stihl. Leaks oil bad too and mines stored in My house. Less than hour used. I wasted $600 on this machine I would stay away if reliability matters. It cut pretty decent but I’m definitely going back to gas. I wish I had my receipt.

              Best Decision Ever
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this about a month ago and I am so happy that I did. I had a few trees that I needed to take down that were dead, and this thing just kept going. With a 6ah battery, I was able to cut down 1 tree and completely chop it up. It was completely flawless. I did upgrade to an 18" Oregon chain and bar, which was a perfect fit. No more messing with gas, no more pulling a string and messing with the choke. This thing works well and I highly recommend it.

                Did not last
Great saw until the warranty expired, causing the motor to immediately die. You get one star for the nice green color.

Decided to try electric and I’m a believer now!
Since I have a lot of other Ryobi tools, I decided to try a Ryobi. I chose the 16 in blade, with the chain brake ,40v, 4.0 battery. I had read reviews of it and they seemed mostly good. I bought the saw because I’ve had trees fall on my property, and want to be able to clear a tree immediately if it blocks my driveway. I thought it was good! if you want to go cut a truckload of wood, you would definitely need more than one battery. If you had the extra batteries, or the more powerful one, I know I would choose it. It’s so much lighter and so so much quieter than my gas saws.

                    It saws well
I bought this 16” saw because I already have 2 of the batteries so I just had to buy the tool. I bought because trees keep falling on my fence. If you are debating, get the 40v battery type. I am a woman and was hoping this would be easy for me to use but I have to admit it’s pretty heavy and the vibration tired my arms out bad after 2 cuts. My husband cut up the rest of the tree. It only took 1.5 batteries to finish the job. It leaks oil no matter how you set it which is annoying

Happy with the switch to a battery one
I live on over 6 acres, mostly fir trees. I've been cutting up downed limbs or trees from storms. I've been using 16" chain saws for over 20 years and decided to try a battery one. The 16" Ryobi with the 4Ah battery has as much cutting power and torque as the gas ones without the noise and gas mixing. No more leaving it running or restarting between cuts. The battery out lasts me, but I'm 75. It will outlast a tank from gas one. If you need more cutting time, buy another battery instead of more gas. It does weigh a little more than a same size gas one, but that's not a problem, at least for me.

                      More than expected
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Purchased just before Christmas 2021 --- WHAT a Christmas present --- upon unboxing and reading thru all instructions I finally installed a battery --- have no idea what to expect but did not expect the sound of this saw --- very aggressive and high speed --- pleased so far but it had not cut anything YET FAST FORWARD Had a large hickory on the property that over time had grown toward a shop building and was leaning badly towards it --- after installing the proper roping high into the tree and tightening all of them, it was PROOF time --- picked up the saw, made the pie cut towards the direction of the anticipated fall --- AMAZED!!! --- not only was the saw capable but it exceeded 4 other gas saws I have had in the past --- once again checked all roping and then proceeded with the felling cut --- very aggressive on removal of wood and in a matter of seconds the tree began to fall guided by the ropes and the hinge left on the tree stump --- I have NEVER had a saw as aggressive as this and after doing all trimming on the fallen tree, the first battery, a 4ah one, finally quit. I installed another fresh battery and it was once again ready for any work --- the oiler mechanism worked fabulously well and during all this process used only a half tank of bar oil --- and did not have to adjust the chain during all the cutting The next morning I removed the bar and chain in the process of cleanup getting it ready for the next project --- cleanup was a snap and after re-assembly tightened the chain tension, filled the oil reservoir and placed on the shelf awaiting the next tree work Fast forward, after a week on the shelf, the oil had not drained out of the reservoir --- I will highly recommend this product

                        Works Great
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This works great no more fuel tank or mixing oil plus no smoke. Battery charge indicator, you can see the chain oil in the storage container. Just pull the trigger and saw it shuts off when you release it. Brushless to last a long time. Just what i need to trim all my limbs and trees around my yard. This Works For Me

Nice and powerful. No pulling off your arm to get it started. No mixing gas.No worring about bad gas or gas gumming up the carb. This saw does still need bar chain oil and I expected it to leak out while in storage but so far it does not. The 4Ah battery lasts quite a long time but I will likely get a 2nd battery just in case I have a job that requires more than one full charge. If you cut trees for a living or all day this may not be for you but for typical home use its a no brainer.
