Q:Will this product work as a primer for a plastic pond/fountain? I will be applying underwater epoxy as the final coat however the epoxy wants me to use a plastic primer first. Will this work?
by|Mar 6, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Matt. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer provides a paintable base coat for plastic surfaces it can not be applied to a fountain. The full water immersion will cause the primer to blister and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Will this product stick to plastic wicker chair with out scratching off?
    by|Oct 8, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  As long as the surface has been properly prepared, Chris, you can expect a good longevity with the Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray over the plastic chairs. We recommend, if possible, a light scuff sanding with a 180 or 220 grit sandpaper, then wiping the chairs with a solvent like lacquer thinner. Once it's prepared, you can apply the primer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Q:Why is not cure time for repaint finish not part of specifications. Last Rustolium I used totally screwed up finish with a 48 hour cure time but dried to touch in 15 minutes.
      by|Oct 26, 2022
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Drying and curing times for coatings are approximate, and we test our paints at 70°F with 50% humidity. Low temperatures, high humidity, and thicker applications will all slow the drying and curing of a primer or paint. All of our aerosol paints and primers have dry and recoat times listed on the product label, and these should be followed to prevent solvent reactions such as wrinkling when the next coat is applied. Our Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray dries to the touch in 20-30 minutes, is dry to handle in 1 hour, and may be top coated after 1 hour. This primer reaches a full cure in 5-7 days. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:Can I paint top coat with acrylic paint?

        Answer This Question

A:  You've come to the right place, John. The Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray can be topcoated with acrylic paint, but we would recommend allowing the primer to cure for 5 to 7 days before using the acrylic paint for the best adhesion. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

It does have good coverage the only problem with the spray can is that it is so thick that the nozzle plugs up quite easy.

This is not what we like to hear Cathy! Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray Paint provides superior coverage. In order to deliver that superior product our paint is loaded with high quality pigment. Shaking vigorously once the mixing ball begins to rattle prior to painting and throughout the painting process keeps everything in the can mixed perfectly, this allows for proper spray.

The product itself worked great, I followed the directions and a couple tips I found online. Little disappointed that it was only offered in a 6 pack, as I now have 5 extra cans of it. The only other place I could find it, the price eas the same for 2 cans which is what I thought I would need. Maybe I'll find a few more plastic projects to do, to use up some more of it.

It didn't work on my pvc pipe. I sprayed it on then used my pink rustoleum spray. I made it dry for over 1 day. When i scratched the paint it came off like butter. Waste of money.

We understand your frustration Alecia. Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray and spray paints take 5 to 7 days to achieve maximum adhesion. We recommend avoiding scratching the surface before this point since the paint film is still developing. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6 Rustoleum

I have great luck with this primer for plastic models.......
I use this as a primer for plastic models and then follow up with gesso for airbrushing. This primer has served me well...... I haven't had any problems with it. And Home Depot has the best price I've found. I'm very happy with my purchase thus far. :)
