Will this primer adhere to bare aluminum? Can Rustoleum epoxy appliance paint be used on top of it?

Asked by Exfil June 4, 2021

Answers

Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray can be applied to bare metal that is not galvanized. If the surface is galvanized, we recommend Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer Spray instead. If wanting to use our Specialty Appliance Epoxy Spray, we do not recommend priming the surface. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Spray-6-Pack-285011/205926957 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Happy to help, Annie! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray is oil-based. I am planning on using this to prime a guitar for spray paint, can I sand between primer coats?

Asked by We March 8, 2021

Answer

Happy to help! When using the Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer, if you do sand between coats, you'll need to allow the primer to dry for 48 hrs before continuing. The reason for this is that the product takes 7-10 days to fully cure and if you sand away the dry layer, you'll be left with the wet solvent. If you apply a new coat right away, it'll wrinkle. As long as you have some patience, you're all set! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Answer

We can help! Lower temperatures can prevent Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray from properly drying. Please keep in mind, this primer has a recoat window of within 1 hour and after 48 hours. If the temperatures drop before recoating, you may need to wait longer than 48 hours before recoating to prevent wrinkling. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Is this recommended for repairs to a chipped/rusted area on a bathtub?

Asked by Scooter January 31, 2021

Hi Scooter, I don’t know how well the spray epoxy would withstand the heat and humidity of the interior of a bathtub. I’ve used it on the exterior of a toilet and it does not come off with typical cleaners. * We used Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile paint on my tub AND surround and it sticks like crazy. (The Tub and Tile paint comes in two separate cans, one is paint and the other hardener, you mix them together just before use. ) I haven’t had any issues with it and it came out beautiful and glass-like. We did two coats and it took two boxes with some left over. * Watch the Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile video and follow the instructions in the package, it’s pretty easy but takes three days to dry. If you do two coats, don’t wait more than an hour between the first and second coat. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Specialty-1-qt-White-Tub-and-Tile-Refinishing-Kit-7860519/202246270

Can this be used on galvanized still pipes (used for decorative purpose, nothing in the pipes)

Asked by thundermaker October 22, 2020

Answer

Thanks for reaching out. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray cannot be applied to galvanized metal. Oil base spray paints are not compatible with the zinc in galvanized metal, they will peel from the surface. First prime the galvanized pipe with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer, you can then top coat with the Rust-Oleum Paint of your choice. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Spray-6-Pack-285011/205926957 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Can I use this on radiator covers with some bare spots

Asked by Jimbo April 1, 2020

Answer

Good question Jimbo! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer can be applied to non galvanized metal surfaces where the temperature does not exceed 200°F. The surface should be clean from and dirt, debris or contamination, any rust should be removed with a wire brush or sandpaper. Clean Metal Primer does require a topcoat which should be applied within one hour of the primer, or after 48 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Its hard to judge this product, it is probably the most durable primer for metal, however in the wrong hands it can run easily as a few members reported. With that said I had a professional sprayer coat two fenders and a hood and not one drip, so this is the correct product in the right hands. If your not used to spraying and spraying something ( especially vertically) where the finish is of great significance like a car, I wouldn't take on the task yourself, get someone with experience as it is extremely difficult to sand off, which is a good thing. If this is for a mailbox or so, than have at it.

This primer worked really great on my wrought iron railings. I striped them down to bare metal with my angle grinder and sprayed this on the next morning. About 15 mins later I went into two coats of satin Canyon Black paint. Everything bonded really well and I am pleased with the results. I will note when spray painting, you need to cover any area you dont want paint on. I found that especially true with this primer. It 'travelled' further than the black paint. Can has good coverage, thick coat. Both railings took 3 cans/coat.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportDec 4, 2020
Let's talk through this, Rachel! Uneven gloss levels or streaking can be attributed to a couple of things such as not shaking the can vigorously enough or holding the can too close to the surface while spraying. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray should be held 10 -16" from the surface. Spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Be sure to keep the can the same distance from the surface and keep the can in motion while spraying. Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart to avoid drips and runs. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
