Q:what nails should be used to attach cedar shakes (without nail gun)
    by|Sep 9, 2018

    Answer This Question

A:  We would refer you to our "Shake and Shingle Siding/Roofing Nail" page on our website, but there are different factors to evaluate to ultimately choose the appropriate nail. Minimum nails depend on the type of wood shingle/shake being fastened and material depends on location. Nails made from 304 or 305 SS are the correct choice inland, but should be 316 SS if within 15 miles of ocean. If the shakes/shingles are FRT treated, then it should be 316 SS. The head on our nails exceeds the minimum, but the length and diameter will depend on your shingle/shake. Length must be long enough so there is sufficient penetration in the roof sheathing. Nails are required to penetrate ¾” into sheathing or fully penetrate if sheathing is thinner than ¾”. Table R905.7.5(2) of the 2018 IRC provides nail requirements for wood shakes and wood shingles. Thank you!

        Response from Simpson Strong-TieMar 27, 2022
Hello Kara, this is Ricardo from Simpson Strong-Tie. Thank you for the feedback. For hardwood, it might be best to predrill the holes. The code states that for wood with greater than a specific gravity of 0.6, that the lead hole (predrilled hole) should not exceed 90% of the nail diameter. Those timbers with specific gravity less than this should not exceed 75% of the nail diameter.
