      Answer This Question

A:  It is engineered wood. I have included the following to help you understand why the industry has gone towards engineered wood. Solid external doors, particular hardwoods like oak, will always have a premium allure to them. There’s an undeniable attraction to products with a solid hardwood construction, but they might not always be the best choice for your project. The door is made from engineered cores. This allows you to have the real look of wood and less maintenance of a solid wood door. Engineered cores are a more modern approach to door leaf construction. Multiple layers of timber are pressed and glued together in different directions to form the core material, with a veneer applied to the surface and lipping fixed to the edges. As solid doors are made of whole intersecting pieces, there is an inherent strength that comes from the construction. They are, however, susceptible to environmental changes such as variations in humidity and temperature. Exposure to factors like these can cause a solid door to warp or bow, making it twist and gradually lose shape. By having layers of timber running in different directions, an engineered core is able to evenly distribute any stress applied to it. This makes an engineered door far more stable than its solid counterpart. This modern construction technique also provides better thermal insulation than that offered by more traditional methods. Hope this helps.

Door is great; learning curve on instalation is steep.
The door is beautiful; hinge placement is difficult. I used the Ryobi hinge mortising kit, which works great. If I had it to do again I would ONLY mortise the top hinge first, then trace the bottom two hinges while still on the door jam onto the door, MAKING SURE THEY ARE PLUMB AND THE EXACT SAME DISTANCE FROM THE JAM TRIM. Then, and only then, would I take the door off and mortise the bottom two hinges on the new door. Hinge placement is the difficult part. Oh, and don't forget that you need to slightly bevel the lockset side of the door when you cut it to the correct width(with the trailing edge being higher) about 2 or 3 degrees; otherwise, you may have trouble closing the door.
