VELUX rigid sun tunnel can be installed in a vaulted ceiling, but it would be best if there was a crawl space present. For short distances between roofline and interior ceiling, consider the flexible tubing models for an easier install.
There is a similar product with low profile flashing that can be found via this link: https://www.homedepot.com/p/306352335 and it is eligible for a 26% Federal Tax Credit too.
For hurricane prone areas, you can choose either design. You may want to check your local building code to see if the impact rated dome is required. The acrylic dome version will have 0000 at the end of the model number and the impact (polycarbonate) dome series will have 1000. Example TSR 010 1000 will be the impact rated sun tunnel.
Hi Gary. If your sun tunnel has a white trim ring around the diffuser lens, you can use part # ZTK 010B which is essentially a blackout shade for a sun tunnel. You can special order this item from Home Depot and it should be approximately $31.00. If your sun tunnel has a clear edge extended from the diffuser, this system will not work. You are welcome to contact VELUX directly for the details.
This model is meant for a sloped roof application only. You can choose the TCR 014 model and it will work on a flat roof application. Here is a link to that item: https://www.homedepot.com/p/205614065 This style will only come in a 14 inch diameter.
Idon't know hwat roofing companies do. I do home remodeling and repairs and I have installed several of these.
The only insect problem I've had is they get inside the tube (somehow) and fall onto the lens when they die. You have to unscrew the trim ring and carefully remove the 10" glass lens to remove them. This remove/replace is a bother, especially if you have more than one.
Yes. If the ribs are at least 12” apart to accommodate flashing
The agency that evaluates roof materials for "high fire hazard zone" construction will have the final say. I've installed two and don't recall any mention of fire limits in their extensive safety warnings. You might also ask the Velux people. The flashing and mounting ring are sheet steel. The lens is hard plastic, and there is a hard rubber gasket between the lens assembly and the tube ring (photo). The tubes are aluminum.
