Q:Looking to use this as weed barrier for my veggie garden: is this what you recommend??

          Answer This Question

A:  This fabric is loosely woven so it would be easy for weeds to sprout through it. If you want to block weeds over a large area, lay down cardboard sheets (flattened shipping boxes with any plastic tape removed) and cover them with a thick layer of organic mulch. The cardboard stops existing weed seeds from reaching the surface and any new weed seeds that blow in and sprout can be pulled easily from the loose mulch.

A:  Yes this can work for weed barrier for frost protection but the Vigoro landscape fabric Medium Duty or the heavy duty Matrix grid is designed for complete weed barrier

Weave is too loose in 2023
Compared to the one I purchased last year, the weave is too big. I needed to use two layers to get the same protection on my arborvitaes. I’d rather pay more to get a quality product. The photo is not an accurate depiction this year. And last year’s weave was already loose. In the photo, the top is this year and the bottom is last year of the same brand.

Weave of product is too loose, and NOT as pictured
Want to wrap some bushes to keep deer from eating them. In pictures, you can see that there are 6 squares per inch (see closeup with quarter). In reality, there are 4 squares per inch. .167 per square vs. .25 per square, i.e. 50% bigger. That's too big for our purposes because leaves will poke through.

I would not recommend. This fabric has such a wide weave, it's hard to call it burlap. The threads are over twice as far apart as burlap. I guess you could double it up to compensate. Disappointed.

                    Good for creating light shade
The open weave of this burlap creates nice, light shade to protect sensitive plants from direct sunlight. Using two layers of burlap makes the shade a little more dense. Like most burlap, this product has a strong odor, but when used outdoors the smell dissipates after a while. I like to use products that biodegrade naturally in my garden and chose to use burlap instead of plastic shade cloth (which also wears out but sheds messy bits of non-biodegradable plastic and will end up in a landfill...burlap can be composted when it wears out). I purchased two rolls of Vigoro burlap at the same time and one was about two feet longer than the other. The shorter one was slightly short of the stated 24 feet (although I suppose if it were stretched really tight it might have reached 24 feet).

Used this to wrap shrubs that don’t tolerate extreme extended cold temps. Highly recommend.

Easy to work with, helped keep my plants from cold damage but so far this winter there were only a few days when the weather dropped below freezing.
