      Answer This Question

A:  Hi! Each cycle consumes less than 1 kWh (approximately 0.8 kWh) - this is roughly equivalent to having a desktop computer running for the same amount of time as the cycle. Dependent on where you live, each cycle should not cost you more than a couple of cents.

          So much easier!!
Composting has been such a pain until now! I can put basically any food scrapes in here (it says to be easy on the citrus) and even some leftover food that doesn’t get eaten (don’t do this too often)! The bucket sits under my sink with the included lid for a couple days as I fill it and then I start the machine before bed (because it takes a few hours and makes a bunch of weird noises as it slowly dries everything and grinds it up). The result from a full bucket of compost is maybe a cup of dry “dirt” that I just chuck back into my yard or garden! No more smelly bins or worms or large backyard piles! Best thing ever.

An Honest Review After Using for 20 Months.
I purposely waited to review this product until I had used it for over a year. I have learned a few things along the way. Yes, the porcelain comes off. It started happening around the 5 month mark. Yes, if the food scraps are too wet or surgery when you start it, the mixture sticks horribly to the sides and you have to soak it for a day. That means you just wasted time, food, and energy to rinse them down the drain. What I do now, is to keep the lid cracked in my pantry, or just leave the bucket out for an hour to let the scraps dry out. It makes a huge difference in the final compost. I have also learned what vegetable scraps make for a better end result. I don't put lettuce or banana peels, or anything with mostly water. I know that defeats the purpose. Egg shells and coffee grinds are great at drying out the final compost. When I used my mixture for my vegetable and flower gardens this summer, I noticed that my fern did NOT do well, and my marigolds also weren't as big. However, all of the vegetables did great, along with my herbs and other flowers. Since I don't know the ratios of carbon, nitrogen, etc. I guess I'll keep learning what things like my personal compost. Hope this helps. There are other units coming on the market all the time. I still like my FoodCyler for our two-person household though, and don't want to spend even more money on a different brand right now. It's quiet and easy to clean.

              Worth it
This thing is great and worth every penny. It’s a bit small for a family of 4 but anything that doesn’t fit we put in our old compost barrels. I’ve put my new compost in the garden, in houseplants, we give it to neighbors, and we always use it when planting something new. We don’t eat a lot of meat but we’ve been composting that too. Our family produces less than 1 garbage bag per week bc we don’t throw away food waste!

              Best kitchen appliance
This Food Recycler had been a fantastic addition to our household! It has drastically reduced our trash waste and improved the soil for our plants. For the few times we've chosen to put chicken bones in, it was nice to be able to throw out significantly reduced trash that didn't stink or attract our pets. I highly recommend this product!!!

              Filters should be refillable
I am very disappointed in Vitamix that the carbon filters needs to be completely replaced and aren’t just fillable with carbon pellets. This is suppose to be a green product and they sell non recyclable filters and make you rebuy the plastic every 6 months.

Response from HHCC Mar 31, 2023
We appreciate you feedback about this product and want you to know that it is something our team is looking into.
                Great start, needs some improvement
The Foodcylcer is very helpful where you can’t compost outdoors and where trash disposal can’t be done often. The organic stuff that I can’t eat (peelings, cores, etc) is what makes my household trash stink. HOWEVER, the lining of the bucket has not held up and I end up with a layers of the compost cooked onto the bottom and sides that is very difficult to remove. I restrict my use of the machine to vegetable and fruit scrap. No bones. Soaking that layer off defeats the purpose of the Foodcycler and expansion of that layer has jammed the mechanism to the point of requiring disassembly. Consequently, I have debated with myself on whether to get a replacement bucket to continue using the machine or give up on it. I finally decided that it was worth getting a new bucket, in hopes that the lining is more durable.

                  Small but mighty
It’s small but mighty. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my foodcycler. We compost, have worms and now this. When we make chicken broth the bones go into the cycler instead of the garbage. Very cool. Wish it came in a bigger size as we use it daily, sometimes multiple times a day.

Great concept, unsure of actual value (FC-30)
I've had the Foodcycler FC-30 for a couple of years now. I bought it because I wanted to reduce food waste and make fertilizer. We are supposed to compost where I live, so this seemed like a great idea for winter months to avoid going out in the snow. I liked the idea of making bone meal from chicken bones for my garden as well has veggie scraps. I have similar complaints to some others: it is a bit noisy and if you leave the scraps in for more than a couple of days, they can get moldy while you wait for more scraps to add. That defeats the purpose. Some of the vegetable scraps do not get that small (see photo). I also find that this is a dehydrator and not really a composter. I did buy the fertilizer tablets. My neighbors all have dogs and they have been very interested in the "fertilizer" from my machine (I was putting the dried material in my flower beds). My one neighbor from the HOA asked me what I was putting in the dirt that was attracting all the dogs. I wish I could say I loved this and it was a smart buy, but I can't. Maybe the newer ones are nicer.

                    It's so easy being green!
After years of waiting for compost to cure during our long Chicago winters, we opted to take composting to the countertop and are thrilled with the results! It feels amazing to keep our compostable scraps out of a landfill and the reward has been the most beautiful garden ever. We have recommended this product to many and purchased it as a gift for our favorite foodies who also love to garden. Highly recommend!

An absolute must if you recycle food!
This thing is awesome. Seriously, this is a game changer in the house! We keep it right on the counter and fill it up almost every day or every other day. If the food will get stinky, then we run it that night and add more the next day. Few pro tips: 1-figure the right moisture amount otherwise you will get a thick syrup that will cake on to the sides ( you have been warned!) 2- avoid really hard foods like raw sweet potato, pits etc. 3- avoid too much fruit at once, you will have a caked on sugar candy mess at the end that will take days of soaking to get it to break down 4- Remember that it is going into your soil, so be sure to avoid salty foods. it will stay as salty when it is done and then when you put it into your soil it can kill your earthworms or plants.
