I stained and varnished these for someone because it was...
I stained and varnished these for someone because it was the look they wanted. The corbels are made of a lot of laminated pieces of wood and the grain runs every which way making them hard to sand. Also a lot of glue squeezeout was at the joints so stain didn't absorb well there. Luckily I was using these to support a small top in a hallway so they are in shadows and not at eye level where you could see the imperfection. If you are painting these then no problem.
