Q:Is this type of wood OK for raised vegetable garden beds since it is untreated? I realize cedar is ideal, but this is less expensive and I'm building a lot of beds.

A:  Yes, but will warp pretty quickly with rain, heat, etc...

      by|Sep 18, 2019

A:  Yes, untreated pine is OK for raised planting beds. Unfortunately, the untreated pine boards will not last nearly as long as cedar of redwood boards. Yes, the untreated pine is less expensive, you will be rebuilding the beds much more frequently and labor is worth money.

      by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, This wood is not treated, so there are no added chemicals to raise concerns for vegetables, etc. Also, being untreated it will rot over time. Contact with soil and water will promote degradation. You may want to wrap it in some way if possible. --- R.W.

A:  Bill, The pine boards we supply are all 3/4" thick. The stores may have some particle board or MDF boards that are thinner. They do have plywood in thicknesses you may want. Some grades have high quality exterior veneers for most finish purposes. Store personnel will cut panels to width/length which may work for you. Good Luck.

A:  The truth is they want you to shop in person and impulse buy, just like the gremlins they have at closing time moving everything around so you cannot find it when you are in a hurry in the morning. You tend to buy more crap when you cannot find what you are looking for. Psychology 101

A:  HI, where I live in Mass this is listed as $9.51 each and their in stock online and in store. So, you would have to contact your local home depot to see what they carry of that in stock. As some items can be in store only exclusive items. Or if not if they may be able to special order it, as not all products are available at all stores. and the selection of what they carry is also determined by location and availability. So it is what your local home depot's distributor carries that determines what is available. Price is also determined by location and availability. But also by manufacturer, which will vary from store to store.

A:  Closer to #3, but it definitely is #2 lol

                      by|Sep 18, 2019

A:  Yes, this is "#2 common" grade. It has few tight knots, though it's not considered knotty pine, and is suited for appearance applications. The species designation is PP/SP, meaning "ponderosa pine or sugar pine" (see the photos in my previous Q&A answer). The boards the HD usually has in stock are ponderosa pine, which has a very smooth face and an attractive grain pattern. I used these boards to make gable-to-eave return boxes, and they have maintained their dimensional stability and paint adhesion for over two years now. TIP: seal all knots, cut-edges, and faces with oil-based primer before installing or painting.

                      Answer This Question

A:  Most Home Depots offer limited cutting for lumber purchased at that store. I would call or visit your local Home Depot to discuss your cutting needs. They should be able to tell you if that store does custom cutting and when the best time would be to have them cut lumber. Obviously, a Home Depot Associate would not have time to do custom cuts during very busy periods in the store.

A:  Home depot does cut wood but does not offer precision cuts so the cuts would be with in 1/2 a inch of the requested dimensions.
