Q:Im using these strips as tracks for sliding acrylic doors the doors are going to be 1/4 thick, so the c (or u) channel needs to be able to accommodate the acrylic doors which come in 1/4 inch panels. The dimensions say that the c-channel is 1/2" wide and the aluminum is 1/16 thick so is it safe to say that the inner space is 3/8" wide?

A: Not exactly. If your requirement is channel then 1/16 is about the thinnest common channel on the market. Home Depot has another product I use for very thin homemade aluminum channel. It is their rolled aluminum flashing. I have hinged two sections of 4 foot angle iron from Home Depot and made a homemade leaf break to fold the aluminum. I hope this helps.

Q:will this work to use for edging on 3/4 inch shelf

Answer This Question
A: The piece I bought has an interior width of 3/4". If your shelf is plywood or solid wood, be sure to measure the thickness. Solid wood is usually labeled by it's rough thickness and is thinner after planing. Plywood runs about 1/32" thinner than what it's labeled because it's simpler to call it 3/4 than 23/32". The channel will of course fit thinner material, but won't be as snug.

A: I have the same question -- which hasn't been answered yet. I suspect that 3/4" is the exterior width, not the interior width, so this would NOT fit on a 3/4" shelf. Given that the material is 1/16" thick, the interior dimension would be 5/8". BUT if the interior width is 3/4", I'd like to know about it.

A: Sure that could do the job

A: The 3/4" is the INSIDE dimension. I built a bookshelf with this serving as the edging on the 3/4" plywood (which are actually .70", not .75"). Fit perfectly onto the edge.

A: Not sure I can help with this wide of channel if you need it in one piece of metal. That last time I had this requirement I used two aluminum right angle sections and a strip of flat stock to join them into a channel. Waring safety glasses, ear protection and quality gloves, I clamped two metal bars to my router table and trimmed the aluminum flat stock to the proper size. I used a high quality silicon to glue there 3 sections of metal into a channel at the edge of the plywood ramp I built. I painted both the ramp and the aluminum prior to applying the silicon. Home Depot will have all of these items either in the store or online.
