A:  I know this is old but for anyone who reads this question later I'm putting my answer here. You technically COULD do this. But you'd want to have all the weight on the very back of the shelf, against the wall. If you understand how torque works, you're going from 100ft/lbs to 200ft/lbs when you jump out from a 12 inch shelf to a 24 inch shelf. These brackets are rated for 100lbs at probably a foot or less. If you but a 4'x4' piece of plywood on this, I doubt it would even hold the weight of the plywood due to the torque. TL;DR If you want to do something like this, get a bigger bracket and you'll be fine. You want a bracket that is almost as deep as your shelf.
