A: There could be an independent transformer supplying 16V power in the attic or nearby
A: If you have a mechanical chime, does the plunger move. If it does, then there's power but the chimer isn't operating properly. If it doesn't move, then there's a chance the transformer is kaput. They are usually two separate items.
A: Yes, the transformer and doorbell are unique items. There are 4 distinct components to a low voltage wired doorbell system: (1) the doorbell which is the item that goes inside your home and actually makes the sound; (2) the push button which is the item that goes next to your front door and your visitor pushes to let you know they are there; (3) the transformer is the item that connects to your homes 120V electrical and "steps down" the power to low voltage your doorbell and push button need; (4) doorbell wire that connects all the other components.
A: Possibly neither. Just wiggle the plungers. Quite often the plunger that strikes the chime simply gets stuck. Take the doorbell unit cover (the wooden part of what you see in the picture) off of the rest of the doorbell. Beneath the wood are 2 metal rectangular plates that are the actual chimes (the brass cylinders are just for looks and maybe a little resonation); a boxy looking thing that has 3 screw connections for 3 wires (Front door, transformer wire, Back door wire); AND it has 2 plungers running through it (metal 'pencil' looking things with spring wrapped around them.) Wiggle these plungers until they move freely. DO NOT OIL THEM. Dust them off and let them be. Keep them dry and clean. If they're rusty or corroded, and don't travel freely, you'll probably have to replace the unit. But mine have jammed about once very 2 years. I free the plunger bars ... and they're good again fro 2 years or so.
A: Got new button put it on then work a bit but the button light never came on then it stop working, but while it did the bells kept on ringing finally had to disconnect it from the front box bell chimes so it wouldn't keep on ringing.
A: There's a risk for trapping moisture and encouraging mold in some climates,
