Q:To Owens-Coring Tech: Can this be used for interior purposes - as a protective moisture barrier layer - applied over supporting horizontal wooden rails that support base cabinets with recently cured white concrete countertop slabs? Or do you have a similar product for interior moisture-prone areas that prevent "sweat" when placed on top of or unde rappliances, like dishwashers. etc.?

A:  I don't recommend using starter shingle as a vapor barrier. They sell a 6 inch roll of bitmen backed flashing that would work as a moisture barrier.

A:  No this product is not for interior use, you could use the Vycor Plus from GCP. It is a door and window sealant tape and would be better for your application.

A:  Reading between the lines, you’re looking to stop moisture penetrating into the wooden rails of your cabinet? I wouldn’t use this for that purpose, given the bitumen, it will prevent moisture but the thickness of the product in an application like between a rail and countertop would cause a rise in that area. I would be looking to use metal tape (the type you put around metal ducting) or Tyvek tape. The metal tape would be better especially for protecting above your dishwasher door

A:  I kept my shingles flush with the starter strip

A:  RSP, The Owens Corning Starter Shingle Roll should be placed granular side-up with the top seal strip closest to the outer edge of the roof. Remove the backing from the underside of the roll and carefully align the edge of the roll flush with the drip edge. Secure the roll by pressing it firmly against the drip edge and underlayment. After properly applying the Owens Corning Starter Shingle Roll the roof shingles should be laid overhanging the starter strip by a distance of 1/4” to 3/4” to direct runoff into the gutter. Be sure to press or roll the first course of shingles firmly down onto the starter shingle roll top seal strip. This seal helps prevent against leaks and against damage to shingles caused by wind lift. Remember that personal safety is paramount when working on any roof. I was picking up supplies for installing a rooftop ridge vent at my local Home Depot when I stumbled across their Werner/UpGear roof-safety harnesses. I thought that these things would cost a fortune but HD had two different kits by UpGear, one at about $99 and one at about $135. It looks like the difference between the two kits is the type of rope-grab device; one being manually operated as needed when moving about on the roof, the other having a self-trailing rope-grab which allows for greater mobility. Both kits are complete units, each containing a 50’ rope, a harness, a lanyard, and a temporary roof anchor. I purchased the self-trailing kit and within a half hour of arriving back at home I was safely working on top of our two-story home. Home Depot also carries permanent roof anchors by UpGear for about $22 each. I will be attaching one of these to each end of our roof so that I will have a readily available safety system when needed, such as when cleaning gutters or installing Christmas lights.

A:  Hi RSP, Ideally the starter strip would be flush with the drip edge and the shingles can be flush or overhang the starter up to 3/4". If you have further questions please contact an Owens Corning representative at 1-800-GET-PINK for assistance with your application. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  I'm not sure if there is an official "correct way" but I always leave the starter flush and overhang the shingles enough to drip into a gutter if I decide to install one later.

A:  Not entirely sure on your application here but I would imagine the underside of the starter roll would adhere to a variety of other roofing products. When peeling off the backing to lay onto underlayment, once it's on, it's on (especially with some sun beating on it) - hope this helps

A:  excellent stick. I don't know about the ridge vent but it sticks great to the drip edge.

A:  Adhesive is aggressive enough for use under the starter coarse but probably would not adhere well to a ridge vent on it’s own

Q:Since the starter roll goes over the under-layment it still needs to be nailed down. How does it seal to the deck, if it doesn't touch the deck?

A:  First install underlayment over roof deck, then install starter board with nails over at all eve edges and rakes then install shingles over. Nailing serve the purpose of attaching the deck.

A:  It is slightly adhesive when you remove the backing film. Once the roof has been warmed it will stick to the underlayment. There is a sticky strip on top which should be downhill, nail just above that, then lay your first row of shingles as normal. The bottom edges of them will eventually stick to the strip and you will have a good first row.
