Q:I started insulating my garage with the faced R-15 product but wasn't planning on adding drywall. Is drywall really required? Sounds like there is a fire risk if I do not drywall?

A: Hello Patrick, the kraft facing is a flammable product and needs to be covered by a 15-minute thermal barrier such as 1/2" drywall. Thank you for your inquiry!

A: Sound is absorbed by material it passes through. The denser material will absorb more sound. From my research, rigid foam is best. A couple layers of 1” is better than a 2” sheet. It supposedly disrupts the sound waves differently.

A: I wouldn’t do since it might trap moisture in the wall and cause other problems.

A: I’d suggest rigid foam instead. From my experience, and research, foam is made for foundation and fiberglass is for walls / attics.

A: Is the concrete water tight? If not, (i.e. if there is efflorescence)then consider sealing the concrete otherwise it will be a cavity filled with damp.

A: Hello JG, as long as there are no moisture issues with the concrete walls the EcoTouch Insulation can be installed directly against the wall. If there are any existing moisture issues we recommend fixing the issues before completing the wall. Thank you for your inquiry!

A: Hello PZ22, We would recommend taking another batt and trimming it to completely fill the cavity width. Leaving a 1" gap within the cavity will allow for thermal loss in that area. Thank you for your inquiry!

A: Cutting a strip to fill the gap should work. Don’t pack it tightly, though, as the insulation properties are compromised when compressed.

A: You could add another 2x4 to reduce the distance. Also, does it reach with extending the tabs on either side?

A: I have often just cut a strip off another batt to fill the space. If you are putting wallboard over the insulation, it will hold it in place, or if you prefer, you can put some tape over the seam.
You can easily cut insulation using a sharp kitchen knife (preferably with at least 9" blade so as to get through all the insulation as well as the paper facing. Stab it with the point of the knife, then use an up and down motion to "saw" through the insulation and kraft facing.
