    Q:Isn?t this the invasive honeysuckle?

    Answer This Question

A:  This one is not invasive. It's well behaved. The invasive ones are L. japonica or Japanese honeysuckle & Hall's honeysuckle. Both are beautiful & smell great but, under the right conditions, will easily overrun youryard.

A:  I don’t see why not. Most of the foliage of my honey suckle are about 3 feet although I have a 6 feet trellis. But you may want to trim after flowering or at the beginning of the spring. Hope this help

A:  ABSOLUTELY!! I put mine in a +-7 gallon pot and really need to re-pot & double the size, if for no other reason except to be able to put a 4 sided trellis. Being in south Florida however I have had to keep it under a carport, about 5 ft inside. The sun almost burnt it to a crisp in April. It has lot's of blooms and the vines grow rapidly. I'm regularly alternating their direction to keep it even! Since it's under the carport, I turn the pot once a week so that I have blooms on both sides of the 5 ft trellis I have in the pot presently. If not in South Florida and 2 we're purchased, it would make a beautiful arbor. I'm very happy with this gorgeous honeysuckle! Sorry I don't have a photo, it's pouring.

A:  It grows like a vine but you do need to train it on the trellis at first by winding  the vines manually then they’ll take over.

A:  I think it would indeed do well for your purpose. As it grows it needs to have some type of support, so if it could lean directly against the fence, that would do fine. As it grows it will also widen in circumference, albeit slowly, so it will cover a larger area as it grows, and the branches would grow through the wires of the fence/pen. If you didn't want the branches going directly through the pen, but only in front of the pen, you could prune them. We've had ours for approx 4-5 yrs now, and it is approx 5ft tall, very full, and it has doubled in circumference (we live in zone 5). It is beautiful, it reblooms throughout the summer and the flowers are beautifully fragrant. The Hummingbirds love the flowers!! I would think as it grows it would easily camouflage the dog pen.

Q:Hello! in answers to previous questions, you have said that this honeysuckle is not invasive (as State Departments of Agriculture define that - meaning it is a non-native plant that is spreading into and crowding out natives in natural areas.) You have avoided stating exactly what subspecies of Lonicera this is, except in just one answer you said that it WAS Lonicera Japonica, which is one of the WORST non-native invasives in the midwest! So which is it? Is this a Japonica, or not? The flowers and scent description certainly appear to be japonica. f it produces berries, it is not sterile, is it?
