Q:does this barrel have to hook up to the gutter or can it sit alone and just have rain fall into it?

    Answer This Question

A:  This barrel has a diverter kit that connects to the downspout. Follow the directions as written. Once the barrel is full the additional water will go down where ever is chosen (down spout, routed into the yard). It does not take long for the barrel to fill up if the directions were followed.

    by|May 5, 2023

A:  Must be hooked up to a gutter in order to work. No Top entry for water since it's a planter.

      by|May 4, 2023

A:  It's supposed to hook up to the gutter, however the planter area on top does have a very small hole that leaks into the barrel. You could enlarge this hole and it would collect more rain water (you'll need a screen if you keep soil/plants in the top as well.

      by|May 4, 2023

A:  There's no hole on top for rain to enter, so must hook up to gutter or drill holes in top

      by|May 4, 2023

A:  It will not collect nearly as much water without the gutter hookup which can fill with a heavy rain.

Q:Do I have to raise the barrel above ground or on ground.

      Answer This Question

A:  Way above ground level to get any flow at all.

      by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes I would be sure they are ground level

        by|May 5, 2023

A:  Since the water flow from the hose is gravity fed, the higher off the ground it is the better flow you'll get. Mine is on the ground, but I have the hose running downhill to the garden.

          by|May 3, 2023

A:  To allow for a consistent flow when using the hose, I would recommend elevating the barrel 8 inches or more from ground level. I've done this and the water flows easily from the hose when required.

Q:Can the hole for the connecting tube be made in the rear? I want to install this perpendicular to a downspout and am wondering if that is possible. This would also mask the tube and allow the barrel to disguise its flat back better based on the placement of my downspout.

          Answer This Question

A:  You can put the hole anywhere you want on the barrel but keep in mind that the diverter can only be installed onto your downspout one way, which puts the tube to the right or left of the downspout. See pic. This means you'll have to snake the tube around to the front of the down spout

A:  The inlet hose is in the back upper corner. The watering hose is in the lower front.

A:  We attached the tubing to the side of the barrel so that it sits flat against the house.

A:  I did the same thing I do for my potted plants. Put some small rocks against the opening so it does not clog.

            by|May 4, 2023

A:  You're probably getting settlement from your gutters. I'd recommend that you put some type of screen on the gutter hole feeding the downspout that the barrel is attached to. I believe That Home Depot sells a ball type screen that can fit in the gutter hole.

              by|May 3, 2023

A:  Drill a bigger hole or put a small piece of screen in front of it.

A:  No. There is no opening on the top of this barrel.

              by|May 3, 2023

A:  The unit is not setup to accommodate a gutter being directly attached. However, it is my opinion that you could modify it to do so. That is, if you carefully measure the size of your gutter and the exact placement where you want the unit to sit away from the wall, you could carefully cut an opening in the top planter section with a jigsaw. Actually, that is a pretty good idea!

Q:It acts like a vacuum has formed. Is there some vent near the top I can't find in the manual?

                Answer This Question

A:  Your diverter might be clogged. The only other hole up top is the drain from the planter which wouldn't have an effect if the diverter was open. Try removing the diverter tube from the barrel and if it begins to flow then you have a clog in the hose or the diverter itself.

                    Q:Is there an overflow valve?

                    Answer This Question

A:  The overflow is in the diverter. Once the barrel is full the water should divert back down the downspout

                    by|May 3, 2023

A:  There is no valve. However, overflow simply goes out the diverter tube back into the drain pipe.

                    by|May 4, 2023

A:  The planter doesn't have a overflow valve.

                      by|May 3, 2023

A:  No there is no overflow valve because the diverter will stop flowing water into the barrel once it is full. The water in the downspout will just continue down instead of flowing into the tube that goes to the barrel. The top of the barrel does have a drain hole so that your plants do not drown.

A:  Yes, it comes with a diverter. There are many other diverters on the market, so I figured that if this one doesn't suit me, I'll go buy another. So far, this one seems to be doing the job, although I had my doubts at first.

A:  Unknown but doubtful. The installation guide under header 'Water Contamination Hazard' specifically says "DO NOT let people (or animals) drink water from a barrel. ...Use barrel water only for watering plants or outdoor cleaning uses."

A:  Since its described as being made from "Resin" and there is no mention of it on the paperwork I'm going to say that it's NOT BPA free. All BPA free products usually clearly state that they are BPA free.
